EA Louse - Why Warhammer failed

how long was WAR in development again ? idiots

About 3 years, which for an mmo is probably too short.

Think the main problem was its release date, 2 months before a world of warcraft expansion. If you are going to try and clone wow releasing it just before a wow expansion is suicide, had they of waited 6 months they would have had more people subscribe.

I'm interested to see how TOR turns out, even more so now. It's been looking pants to me from the beginning, but I know a lot of people are interested, so am eagerly awaiting to see if they are dissapointed or enthralled with the game everyone has been hyping about.

probably closer to 4+ years

they scrapped another mmo when they got the license so they probably reused a lot of stuff from that game , i'd imagine they were working on the same wow clone before they got the license at the start of 2005 aswell and then just adapted it to warhammer

for all that work they released a game with barely any proper pvp at end game the system was so flawed im amazed they couldnt see that from the start

I want to know if Rob Denton really did hire his girlfriend and put her in charge of a content development team.

Honestly, how screwed up does a company have to be for you to be able to get away with crap like that?

Not quite sure why he mentions the SWTOR 20gig install and queries why good voice/sound FX?

I reckon it's 50/50. I can believe the parts about Warhammer purely based on the fact that they partnered with GOA again.

The game you are talking about was Imperator Online and it' was vastly different to Warhammer Online so I doubt they could use stuff from it in WAR.

Lets just say it had more F words in than any reasonable person would use, it just made Ealouse one look a lot more believable, that it solicited such a response, had it not being one swear, insult, aggressive response I would still have just shrugged off what Ealouse said, but after rude boys response really makes you wonder.

a lot of MMO's falter because the publishers are unwilling to give the developers time to produce a successful game. The Publisher gives them the time table and the cash injection and they want a return on that money on schedule. As most people know those timetables either slip or are unrealistic in the first place therefore the Publishers are unwilling to expend additional resources in giving developers the time they need. Hence why we get games like Warhammer and Star Trek Online which I followed closely, sold well in terms of box sales but as soon as people had used up their free month, user levels would drop and the number of actual subscribers isnt anywhere near the box sale numbers.

Fortunately for Star Trek, the licence is strong enough to retain enough subscribers to keep the development team intact and allow future development, unfortunately the Warhammer licence is not that strong.

I don't know if what this disgruntled EA employee is saying is true although as Robert remarked thier decision to employ GOA again when they did such a poor job on DAoC seemed counter-intuitive. Also dire marketing that blighted DAoC seems to have been carried over again.

Will be interesting to see the response to this.

Star trek is a awful awful game that will not make it, its proves the point that people are not so stupid as developers think they are, the(the Dev's) think if its got a great IP the game can be rubbish and people will stick with it ... not so much .. I canceled my pre- order on that game just on the open beta it was sooo poor ( got my money back ) :)

Big corporations like EA don't care about anything except profits.

This is the reason why I have a huge respect for the Sony/Polyphony Digital relationship, Polyphony Digital are given the freedom/time they need and it shows in the end product.

It's just a shame for everyone that all these other developers are given impossible deadlines and their game suffers as a result.
Honest question - do you think that this just shows the differences in corporate culture between a US based company versus a Japanese one? Perhaps Im just seeing what Im looking for but it definitely appears that developers associated to US publishers just are pushed to meet deadlines irrelevant of the quality of the final product...

This doesn't make sense as Japanese games are equally terrible. FFXIV is an even bigger flop than Warhammer and has spent far longer in development with more funding.

is it a flop in asia? its a massive market over there just because most westerners dont like it doesnt mean the more native people dont

Indeed - what a small-minded thing to say  - I didnt say that Japanese publishers dont make poor games...

GT5 is such a massive game for the PS3 though, its going to sell consoles when it comes out, heck its even sold consoles before its come out. If the game was forced to be be finished quickly and rushed then Kazunori Yamauchi would let it be known that the game was unfinished and he simply wouldnt support it. Would create a huge amount of negative publicity for Sony. Its got to the stage where Yamauchi has Sony by the balls, the game will come out when he says its ready and Sony cant really do anything about it :)

Im not just talking about GT5 - its just an impression Ive had when I recently read stuff regards Sega/Sony and how they act as publishers compared to the likes of EA/Activision (though I did think EA were changing their stance, but it doesnt help they are having to go through a necessary restructure).

For good or bad PD were always going to be in a unique position when it comes to the next GT...
