Chinese name pronunciation

I know I could do that, but I don't like to be culturally ignorant. This way I actually learn how to say it properly.

Well we've had about 6 different variations so far in this thread so how are you going to know which is correct? lol

And yeah, i don't think its ignorant of you not to know how to pronounce his name, considering you speak English and his name is Chinese? Seems pretty reasonable to me :P

There is no way to tell from the way he writes his name, what the correct pronounciation is. Especially considering that his mother tongue could be any number of dialects. I would suggest that he is used to people asking how to pronouce his name and that he would rather you ask than guess and have to correct you.

Also, I would suggest that "Ching Chong Charlie" is a racist slur on every level

£5 your way if you ring him and when he answers you say,

"Oh my god its Jackie Chan!"

If that fails then Zan-Gee it would be. I know how you feel anyway, can be quite difficult at work when I have to ring a customer because I can't find the address etc. I get really nervous about what to do, do I go for it and potentially make a fool of myself or just take the easy way out and say "Hi, its Tesco etc etc."

On an interesting note, best name I have ever seen was Mr Thodasphong Kongathong

More to the point how do you pronounce the surname Ng?!
I've seen loads here at work but never know how to say it.

While we're on this topic, how do you pronounce "Lian Li"?

According to their website, the characters they use are 聯力 -

聯 (lián) meaning "unite" and 力 (lì) meaning "power" or "strength", so it should be kindof lee-en lee, the first part rising in tone and the second falling. Explaining pronunciations using English is damn tricky though :p

Xi = Shi (as in 'she')
An = en (as in the letter 'N')
Ji = gee (as in the letter 'G')

So it's near enough Shi-en-gee.

We had a chinese guy in our block for the first year of uni. It was fun on the first night, trying to pronounce his name, but none of us quite got it right. We just called him Colin after that, and the name stuck right through to second year.

I've been putting off making a call to a guy called Xianji because I have no idea how to pronounce the name. Anyone know how to say it?
