As the French are now on 6th Day of strike and are really bringing the country to it's knees in their rightful protest not to pay for mistakes at the highest level has Britain gone soft all I read on the BBC site is the government being allowed to drastically cut all sorts of social welfare, now the countries defences are being cut back scrapping ships and personnel. Is there no end of cutbacks in the UK and is there no one left with any moral fibre to take the government to task? Labour seem pretty ineffective in opposition unions are virtually silent and lib dems are toothless.

I'm glad the French are at least showing that joe public is not happy with the bail out of the financial system at their expense.

Mistakes at the highest level?

Aren't they wanting to put the retirement age from 60 back to 62?

I'm of the belief it'll be at least 70 by the time I get to retirement age. I'm also pretty sure there'll be no state pension.

All strikes do is make things worse for everyone. What's the point? We squandered money and now we have to make cuts. It's not much fun, no one likes it and striking about it wont make one sodding bit of difference.

Get it right, the lazy French Joe public don’t want to retire two years later at 62 instead of 60. My heart bleeds for them. ;)

The French are just being stupid now, sometimes you need to strike (over fuel duty etc), but right now the government are in the right

Agreed, the people at the highest level are just finally breaking the bad news to a group of people that should have been told a long time ago.

You haven't been paying enough towards your pension so you're going to have to work longer. 62 is just the beginning.

They are cutting welfare because welfare is too high for people earning large amounts.

I think the difference between us and the French is we realise this is the right this to do.

How is this the right thing to do in the UK?

It was the banks and the wealthy rich that lead us into this so why is the middle class getting shafted for their mistakes?

The rich get richer and poor get poorer.

Yes, the UK is soft and take it bent over at every opportunity.

As others have said, its not popular but we at least realise it has to be done. Everyone know that the retirement age is going to have to go up and it makes sense.

The average life expectancy is higher now than it has ever been which means people are claiming more money back from the state. The only way to fix the inevitable hole in pensions is to stop paying it/stop increasing it or to gradually increase the retirement age.

If you've been sensible during your life you can retire whenever you like anyway.

what exactly do you suggest? please enlighten us.

While the banks didn't help, it was also the fault of the public for taking out ridiculous mortgages and living on credit. The banks shouldn't have given it out, but the public should have known better as well.

Thatcher culled our unions and the average British Joe on the street roles over like a submissive dog.

Its quite a weird one to strike over but im sure that it will cause some concessions

The global financial crisis has very little to do with the huge deficit that Labour ran under Brown giving us a chunky debt, it is due to Labour that we have to cut not due to the banks

this, the country is so much in debt it's crazy, cuts need to be made otherwise it'll just keep growing.

Although I do wonder why the government keep announcing increases in other things and new schemes, we're supposed to be cutting not increasing. For example

The Financial Times reports that, in his statement to Parliament, Mr Cameron will say spending will double on alleviating poverty in areas of conflict - such as Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia - to £4bn ($6.3bn) by 2015, while funding to other states like Russia and China will be reduced.

Are you telling me that the banks in this country have lost all the money that they gave to the UK public through loans and morgages? Ye, right!
The banks never loose out!

We can do the following:-

- Sell RBS
- Sell Northern Rock
- Sell gov owned shares in Halifax
- Scrap Tridan

There are plenty of billions to be had in the above alone to cut the deficit which stands at £80billion over the next few years. Tridan is £20billion alone!
