BA, Virgin or United to Washington

Continental are still using 757s as far as I'm aware, along with the rest of the major US airlines..

Yep Conti use the 757-200 ER(?) out of the UK regionals- Belfast, Bristol, Birmingham, etc, plus LHR too I believe. It's OK- the business seats have just been refitted and are quite nice actually.

Whereas the 300ER is so radically different to a 200ER that all the passengers can tell the difference right

I would imagine that the airlines themselves know better than you, rypt.

14 years is nothing in aircraft design terms. It's still a very modern aircraft?

I've just completed a 777-300ER differences course (engineering) with BA and theres not many differences at all with regards to maintenance, course only took 3 days to cover engines, airframe and avionics. The main (noticeable) difference is in the cabin where I wouldn't even compare the old 777-200 with the new one. Totally revamped throughout, with an impression of space, new designed seats throughout in all classes, first class is absolutely stunning, and the ife system is brand new (made by "Thales"), much bigger screens in all classes. I sincerely believe that other airlines are gonna take a very close look at this aircraft to see what passengers think of this, it really is that different.
I would say ALL the engineers that have seen this aircraft are very impressed with it, especially the interior (and it takes a lot to impress us as we're a right cynical bunch:))

Looks like will be going with Continental for this. BFS-EWR-DCA.

Anyone know if 1hr10 is long enough to connect at Newark or is it a pain to get through? Last year going to states I had to recheck in my bags at Miami on the way to Orlando. Almost missed the flight.

An hour might be pushing it..Newark's still a biggish airport. Also never underestimate how long the security lines can be in NY. Probably do-able but may involve maximum amounts of panic if you do have to re-check bags ect.

I've done the BFS-EWR route a few times although my connection in EWR was always a few hours apart.

1:10 is cutting it very close. EWR gets very busy at around lunch time and the immigration queue can take an hour. You'll also have to go through security again which during busy spells can take up to another hour. Get a seat at the front of the aircraft if you can so you can be one of the first off and run to the immigration line. All you need is to get stuck behind a few dodgy people (quite likely on the BFS flight :D ) and you'll have a much longer wait.

CO are very good about putting you on the next flight though as long as there is room.

The better and cheaper way to fly would be BHD-LHR with bmi and LHR-IAD with UA.

Oh, sign up for Continental OnePass. Even as a basic member you get priority on standby over non-members should you have to deal with that.

Yep I have the option of Going LHR-IAD with Virgin too but the times aren't as good for me. I'm very close to BFS and the CO flights are top of the 'approved' list so it will have to do. The later flight on to DCA allows me 3hrs15 for connection so might as well go for it.

For the return journey I take it I don't have to recheck in the bags again and so would be ok for a tighter connection?

Is CO economy class decent enough on the 757s?

Yup, no need to recheck baggage on the return and no immigration to deal with. Depending on the terminal, you mightn't even have to go through security again so a tighter connection would be fine.

The 757 isn't bad. It's not great either. It can feel quite cramped but the in flight entertainment consists of usual CO seat back video on demand and the last time I did it, there were power outlets in all rows. It'll not matter that much anyway. Depending on the NATs and winds the flight over is a touch over 7 hours and we made the return in under 6 hours last time :D

Thanks for the info. I think it is the easiest/best option I have. I don't want to have to lie around in LHR for ages after a long flight being totally knackered and just wanting to roll into bed.

EI/BA BFS-LHR-IAD doesn't seem to be approved carriers for some strange reason.
