found an email at work being nasty about me.

File a complaint, Start with the fact they didn't log their system off, and move onto the fact emails between the assistant manager and manager were on screen and they were essentially bad mouthing you behind your back.

Do not say you looked through any emails. Simply put, You moved the mouse and the messages were there infront of your face.

He can't prove that he didn't snoop around once he found the computer unattended can he? it can backfire and get him accused that he had the opportunity and started reading other people's email.

It's quite a difficult one.

Claim that they were obviously aiming for him to read it as some kind of intimidatory response to his customer-based suggestion by leaving it on-screen so it would be the first thing he saw after waking the monitor?

I'm sure that's honestly how the OP feels... ;)

You should have amended the email with several other peoples names and hateful personal attacks about them then sent it out to a few of the wrong people like he did it by mistake. Doubt he would last long after that.

The IT policy will (usually) state that using the company network to communicate such remarks or similar is against company policy.

You could raise this issue (the fact that the screen was unlocked and unsecured and your name on screen stood out and that's how you saw the email).

Yeh we have this as well, Also according to the handbook they see this as a form of bullying.

Maybe i will speak to my manager tonight and see what he suggests.

Well, the OP hasn't even mentioned what they do in particular so they might not even be an admin?

This is a large company, all systems are dummy systems which require a login and password to get you into a restricted version of windows CE, All servers are based in america.

Only way i can access the guys emails is by knowing his password which i didn't, the systems normally log themselves off after a few hours as well.

This is what I was thinking.

I think the best move here is to just swallow your pride and take it on the chin.

The guy that sent the email back to the main boss was probably just trying to suck up to him. Just carry on with your work imo.

Since when can people not have private conversations?
The problem here is you reading other peoples email. It's just the electronic version of a chat around the water cooler.

They don't like you, get over it?

In all seriousness NEVER EVER EVER write anything in an email you are not happy for everyone to see.

NEVER write anything bad about someone in an email

NEVER say anything about someone you would not say in front of your boss and them and their lawyer and a court...

Oh I quite agree that technically you could have them on it, but given this would basically prove them right why not forget about them?

Would you be so upset if you overheard them having a discussion behind a closed door?

At least you have written proof of whats said.....

I dread to think whats said of me from time to time at work.

- Like I give a **** tbh....

Maybe you came across as a charmless idiot in the e-mail, perhaps seemed like you were shirking responsibility? Either way its not the way things should be done.
I wouldn't recommend an official route of complaint, just speak to him in person

I wish I had that sense of thinking. I just can't do it though, I care about what others think of me! And I hate giving people a reason to dislike me, or just generally not getting on with someone.
