Spec me a car thread 8K to spend

I may be putting two and two together and getting 7 here, but does that mean some 'Vettes were built RHD? And therefore in a parallel universe, with a lot of money (many thousands probably?), patience and flesh wounds you could convert one to RHD?

I love the idea of a 'Vette, but I also like being able to see out of junctions just as well as everyone else :p

Oddly enough I never found junctions (maybe because people were alway letting me out?), nor driving in general, an issue at all - but some people just don't get on with it, which is understandable. No such problems here :D

They're not built RHD - but by law every car in Australia has to be RHD so over there they're converted and resold.

There are a few in the UK that have been converted by aftermarket suppliers as well - the quality varies from car-to-car....

So yes, in answer to your question, it can be done :)

Im in the middle of buying as MK2 Escort... So that will fit the above :p I want something comfy, spec'd up and fast :)

have did i never know such a car existed? How many organ's would i have to sell to keep up with the running costs?

/sticks finger in the air
/pulls out lengthy string

All of them! Probably need to sell an arm and leg as well :P

Right I had a good chat with a guy who owned an S2000 earlier on. I think that this is the car for me, however I have just had a quote of over £2k! Im yet to ring my current insurer to get a quote. But does anyone else on here have an S2000 and what kind of insurance you paying? Im 24, 5 years no claims (2 months off 6). Have works car etc.. So would like to compare to other people first :)

S2000's are a nightmare to insure so i am not surprised at that quote. My insurance on my S2000 was more than i am quoted for virtually any other vehicle, and certainly more than i paid on other better cars (Porsche 911 for example).

I found the Admiral group of companies to be the most competitive.

Jez, you're the OcUK Resident Merc guy....;)

What are C32's like to run?

I have had 2 Mercs in my entire car history, i am not sure i am exactly a "Merc guy" :p

I have no specialist knowledge on that model specifically, but i wouldnt be worried really, Mercedes parts are expensive but on the whole the cars are pretty reliable. At 9 years old the things which are likely to go will be electrical motors and other devices which lunch bearings and brushes over time. It doesnt have any form of self levelling suspension as far as i am aware, so no bills there.

I'd be more worried about its body, check for any signs of rust, any at all and i wouldnt go near it. Cars of this age are awful for it, it is what is going to be the end of mine.

Servicing on them will come around roughly every 10k, stick to a proper indi and you will have it serviced for between £200-£500 per time, so nothing out of the ordinary.

Now that post makes them sound 'almost' cheap and cheerful to run :p

I guess the S class in particular is a little more of a special case though, since it has an enormous amount of stuff to go wrong ...and correct me if I am wrong but most of your really nasty bills have come from the suspension?

Im always wary of old AMG 's for the same reason as i am wary of old Jag R's.

They will have been thrashed from day 1.

It does sound like that doesnt it! For what must be an M3 level car!

My thoughts exactly.

But i have always been scared of running a Merc - i've always figured that the good ones can give some absolutely eye watering bills.

What were they thinking when they designed this?

What I don't understand is why that Volvo dealer insists on cropping all his pictures into a bloody oval with a white border, it looks ****!

The S hasnt had an enormous amount go wrong with it, just everything bearing related due to age and its heavy usage, and the suspension of course. I kept it within the main dealer network for quite a while which exaggerates things too. Remember it is used as a daily workhorse, it gets absolutely hammered and has done 160k now too which will be ~200k before next year end is out if i keep using it.

As long as you stay away from the main dealer network i cant see that C32 costing much at all to run with lowish usage. If you want to be organised about it; Budget £500 for an annual service/MOT, chuck another £1000 per year into a repair fund the first year which you keep topped up when its used for out of service repairs, and just keep on top of the tyres. I would be massively surprised if its total upkeep was much more than a couple of grand without fuel.

Also got my eye on a BMW 330CI Clubsport. Only problem is it has the Auto Box with optional manual selection. What are these gearboxes like? Anyone had one?
