£1000

dropped prices on 460/470's literally 10 minutes ago, what do you recon. Drop the SSD & SLI 460's? do OC let you switch mobo's in the pre-overclocked bundles if you add the extra ££?

Have you considered trying AMD? The Phenom 2s are nice lil CPUs and offer you a lot of bang for your money, if gaming is your thing you wont notice any difference between a Phenom2 and an i5. And the Black editions such as http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-244-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1328 are an overclockers dream giving even more value. Not only is the CPU a lot cheaper but the mobos for AMD are much much cheaper and tend to be rich with state of the art features such as USB3 and Sata3.

Also, and this is just my opinion some will defiantly agree but if you want to play games a 60gb SSD wont really cut the mustard considering games are starting to take up to 20gb in installs. To me its not worth the money just for an OS boot drive so go for a 120gb or spend the money on a gtx480 :). This is of course if gaming is what you care about as a priority.

i5 760 easily beats a 955be at stock speeds - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/191?vs=88

as for state of the art features such as SATA and USB 3.0, do you think that is exclusive to the AMD platform or something?

64gb is plenty.

and finally, why ask him to look at a 955be cpu, when he has a 940BE cpu? http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/80?vs=88 thats one stunning upgrade right there!! more like what a waste of money!!LOL

lol, missed the post about the 940 sorry my bad. Might be worth saving your money then and sticking with it, some life left in that puppy yet.

There's really not much substance in the AMD better value for money argument at the moment, imho. Difference today between the i5 760 and 955BE is £21. Same RAM, same range of prices you can choose to pay for mobos. So not much in it, but the i5 is more powerful at stock speeds, and in addition will overclock much more. No brainer to me - but maybe I'm missing something??

The AMD mobos are a fair chunk cheaper aswell so a total saving a bit more than £21 but tbh your right not a huge difference but certainly noticeable (£40-50 saved can go into a better GPU for example). There both very nice CPUs however, im not ashamed to admit im a lil bit of an AMD fanboy so i tend to lean that way.

cheapest AM3 motherboard £48.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-424-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

cheapest socket 1156 motherboard £55.21 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-040-AK&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1124

so £6.21 difference.

cheapest AM3 motherboard with all the latest tech features £69.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-133-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

cheapest socket 1156 with the latest SATA and USB3.0 £74.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-418-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1124

so £5 difference.

hardly a chunk cheaper is it!

Pretty epic feature difference between those to boards so yeh, its a bargin at £6 cheaper.

But are they, but are they?

Like i said its not huge but whenever i try to put together a fairly decent quality build the Phenom2 ones always about £40-50 cheaper than the i5 with all the features i want. Perhaps i exaggerated with "Fair chunk cheaper" but there is a difference.

How about this, you ignore my posts and ill ignore yours then we will all be happy.
