Me and Mrs Poole have decided to spend 3 nights in Edinburgh to celebrate 30 years marriage.
I've never been to Scotland before so will I be safe?
We like Museums and history but at night we'd like entertainment especially live bands.

Any ideas, hotels, what to do fully appreciated.

(This is the worst 'look I've been married 30 years' thread ever)

(congratulations!)

Well I went to Rosslyn Chapel on Sunday and that was well worth it, its about 7 miles out of the centre with easy bus access. One of the strangest and beautiful buildings I've ever been in. Its probably most famous for being in that Dan Brown films with Tom Hanks.. Its very mysterious and architecturally stunning, lots of Knights Templar / Masonic legends about the place; and the lands around. If your into that sort of thing its a must see. They have guided tours every hour or something, Costs £7 to get in though... and not photography allowed.

Oh and wrap up warm.

.

Yes definitely - didn't know it was so close.
I've just watched a documentary on the Templars and of course I've had books since the 70s.
Thanks for that.

Our Dynamic Earth from another thread looks good.

Still need live band/artist pubs though.

Whistle Binkie's has quite a lot of live music, its a cellar bar just off the Royal Mile. Usually some good rock covers bands in there, my mate plays in a band called SugarHouse, well worth seeing...

<edit> Oh and congrats :D</edit>

Mary King's Close is worth a shot (as mentioned above), but I wouldn't exactly call it scary and if you like the sound of it, book in advance. Very interesting though and really quite grim. There's some mad National Trust house on the Royal Mile worth visiting too, just can't remember the name...*searches google*....Gladstone's Land, that's it. It's a mishmash of lots of eras/periods and really quirky from what I remember.

Edinburgh Castle is well worth a visit too, quite a lot of military history there. However, it's basically 2 or 3 hours of reading about how much Scotland hates the English and why. :p

Oh, and congrats! :)

Where's Biohazard when you need him?

I've just spent an hour looking through live entertainment pages in Edinburgh and not come up with much during Oct 27, 28 and 29.

In general, Whistle Binkies, Sneaky Pete's, Bannerman's (All on/by the Cowgate) and Henry's Cellar Bar (slightly further out) will have live music most nights of the week. There's so many bands around that it's hard to recommend anything specific to see, though purely as a place to go, I probably prefer Bannerman's. They should all at least have Myspace pages with listings for the coming month.

There's also The Captain's Bar and The Royal Oak within 2 minutes of each other on South Bridge, they're pubs with live folk music most evenings - the quality and time tend to depend who shows up to play on any given night. Oh, and Sandy Bells around on (I think) Forrest Road is fairly similar. There's the Reverie on Newington Rd too, their events change all the time, but it's usually fairly mellow stuff there.

Can't think of any other smallish venues off the top of my head - most places larger than those with actual ticketed events are on the Ripping Records site. I've no doubt there's plenty more small venues around, those are just the ones I've ended up at in the recent past. Enjoy, whatever you end up doing :)

Edit/ As for Ceilidhs, I confess, they're not my thing so much - though there seems to be one at the Ghillie Dhu on the Friday night. Can't help much more than that though, sorry!
