I bought a Civic VTI - Tell me what I can do with it?

Last week I picked up a tidy red Civic VTI Aerodeck for £1000. It's a 1998 S reg, in red, 110k miles on it.

Basically it's the family passion wagon for hauling the wife and baby about on the bi-weekly trips down to London we make.

I'm going to do a service on it tomorrow, but I wondered if there were any simple modifications I could make to liven it up a little bit ( it's a little bogged down at low revs.)

Probably aye, just recalling a converasation with a local Honda Nut who previously owned an ATR, sold it on for an Aerodeck, and the gearbox conversation came up...someone more knowledgeable will confirm/deny :)

Yeah you can fit an S80 gear box from an Integra Type-R. Its the best bang for buck mod you can do to these depending on what you consider is expensive for a gear box as the ITR gear boxes will set you back about £450 for a decent one from a place like R-Motion. The standard S9B box has LSD but also has terribly long ratios

Eibach springs are a good mod, massively changes the handling from standard

Exhausts from Mongoose, Blueflame and Supersprint are available

You can DIY the intake to make it sound a lot nicer, its easy to do and pulls a little better top end but you lose a little throttle response, worth it though

That's just the way they are, no point trying to eek more performance out of it.

Just give it new oil, gearbox oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs.

Save your money for the baby :)

Aaaah there it is, ta. The conversation revolved around the whole dropping out of Vtec issue with the std. gearbox.

Trade it in? A Honda civic doesn't sound like the most inspiring choice for taking the family to London on a regular basis :p

haha

it's cheap, comfy and reliable, got better things to pour money into really :)

An aerodeck for £1k is very good reliable value for money.

I might have some bits knocking around if you want them. Certainly got a spare bumper I want to get rid of!

It shouldn't be too slow at the bottom end, are you sure it's ok?

I did the gearbox, exhaust, manifold and intake with mine but thats as far as it went engine wise.

You've got to ask yourself whether you want the additional noise if you are carting the family around.

Have you checked if it's due a timing belt? (every 60k miles or 5 years, whichever comes first).

They tend to feel a bit sluggish at low RPM, but only because they pull so well at high RPM. In reality they aren't much, if any slower than most cars with similar sized engines at lower RPM.

I wouldnt bother with a ITR gearbox. They not really that cheap to buy and i think you would benifit from looking at what really needs done on the car. with its age and milage it would benifit from suspension and bushes.

So it would be worth maybe considering the eibachs with maybe some KYB dampers if you can get them. The eibachs can make them quite low at the front so take that into consideration.

If its "sluggish" down low then there is something wrong with it. They are like Dogbreath says no slower than any other 1.8 standard car.

No way TheDome, I wondered where all the Honda Evs members got off to and this is it

He's been here over 8 years:p Honda Revs only closed a couple of years ago didn't it?

Dogbreath - what happened to your cheap turbo MB6 project? I think it was you..

It changed from Honda Revolutions to Honda Evolutions because of some ownership issue. I've just checked and its still there, the only registered user logged in is.......TheDome, bit of a nostalgia hunt!? :D
