Squatters and UK law

Utterly ridiculous.

Why cant he just phone the police and say hes being burgled ( he is ) and have them arrested?

They'll be evicted without a problem. However the police should have the right to go in and remove them forcibly.

I don't have any problem with people occupying uninhabited premises as long as they treat it with respect and leave when asked by the owners. Squatting in empty buildings/old houses is quite big in Bristol, a friend of mine couldn't afford to live anywhere so ended up squatting in a disused set of flats with a group of other people in the same situation. Everything was cleaned and tidied when they all left, as it should be.

G15 would be **** for hitting someone with. Get yourself an IBM Model M or Filco mechanical switch. The switches are mounted on a steel plate. If you hit someone with it you'd probably kill em.

Surely they can be arrested for damaging the locks?! Breaking in?! Can't he just get a lock smith to get himself in, once inside call the police and say people are tresspassing in his home?! I don't know anything about this type of law but surely there is something he can do, I really don't understand the difference in this and coming back to find you are in the process of being burgled.

Actually maybe burglars should take note if they get caught in the act - "no officer, I'm actually squatting!"

Trespass is a civil offence not a criminal one, therefore the police won't touch it. I agree that the trespass laws in England and Wales urgently need re-examination when this sort of thing goes on. The problem is I heard about a case where squatters got evicted after a lengthy civil court process, and on the night before they had to move out they had a party and burnt the house down

Get a lock smith and change the locks, I doubt the squatters could physically stop them, if so, call police and claim assault? :)

The thing that really takes the **** is the picture of them looking out the window looking all smug and laughing

normally im not bothered by things like this but for some reason this story and has really gotten to me

how can the law allow this

god knows what the dogs and people are doing to this man's belongings and he is powerless to stop them
