I've had both iPod Touch 3G 32GB and Creative Zen 2GB, I think the latter sounds better. No smart-phone comes close in terms of sound quality and battery life of either though.
 
mp3 players dont excite me any more. they're all rubbish. I often poke fun at my sony x-series. No word of a lie, ive used it once in the last 12 months and that only confirmed what i thought of it. Ive been so used to using my decent hd650's at home that taking the x-series out was painful. I was listening to La roux and it was disappointingly harsh and thrashy and no wasnt because i was using the stock earphones - they are much better driven by the amp ive got at home. The x-series like most sonys (well, all of them) doesnt have enough guts and gets a little unsettled when pushed. They fair much better with decent sensitive earphones but the problem is so does everything else, and in many ways respond better to them then the sonys do.

.....so my sony went back in the draw where it's stayed ever since.

My best mp3 players have all been Sony Walkmans. Haven't found a match for sound quality.

Old school iRiver with optical out + external DAC + decent headphone amp = Win. It's a little too much to carry when out and about however! ;) Give the Sansa clip a bash, they can be picked up for peanuts and I found it sounds decent with the Goldring DR-150's. For something so small it does sound surprisingly nice IMO.

I haven't tried it with my HD-600's though, but I probably wouldn't wear them outside anyway. :)

Not sure if it's still the case now but in 2008 the iPhone had better sound quality than the iPod Touch. That's a smart-phone. :p

They have good battery life too when mostly using the iPod function, I'm interested in a Sansa clip but I'd prefer a large hard drive based player, they seem to have died out though. Such a shame.
 
ok, i gonna get the Sansa Clip+ 8gb then..now im worry about the sound delivered from the stock earphone..well,you know,there may be some flaws on it.thinking of getting a noise cancelling and enhance the sound quality produced from the mp3 itself. didnt really mind whether it is a headset or in-ear type,as long as it is not a chucky headphone.

as i look through the Amazon, the Clip+ is cheap and i got another 40quid to get a earphone..
suggestion,and please vote.

There were good deals on HUKD with Sansa Clip+ 8GB for £35 and a decent microSD 16GB card for £15 or so. That would be a nice combo for £50 ish and 24GB storage.

I couldn't tell the difference between iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G. I think they share the same components.

I have an Sony NWZ-something and it does sound massively better even with a very cheap portable amp like a Fiio E5, like night and day on some headphones. Saying that, even at 'stock' it is significantly better than most other portable sources.

If you can push that to £50 and are willing to wait until they come back on offer and wouldn't mind headphones that aren't bulky I'd get the Goldring NS-1000s, they're absolutely perfect for portability, not too large, noise cancelling, sound fantastic too when paired with my Clip+. Some people will suggest getting the E5 amp but I find noise cancelling on and bass knocked up a tad in Rockbox does much better, personal preference of course but that method doesn't cost more either ;)
 
If you get the clip do a factory reset and set to rest of the world, gets round the EU limited sound output.

I bought one reecently as a backup player for going on hols. I think my Xfi sounds slightly better but really thats probably just cos I know it cost more.
 
Think ive found my perfect set up now ,the sound is mind blowing ,very airy spacious soundstage ,pristine highs and low but controlled bass ,taken a lot of swaps to find this synergy

ibasso flat silver cable
neco soundlabs amp with the twin single ad8610 upgrade
ultrasone hfi780 cans :)

its the portable one not the mosfet but i ordered the upgraded battery and the ad8610s with special delivery was around £96.50 ,no regrets though its amazing ,pics to follow when i get a nokia usb lead!

ok maybe a bit bulky and i need something other than a bobble to connect ,as a player the sflo is amazing but battery life and ui may let it down to others ,other than this ive always loved cowons they have a bit more output than other players and sound great ,i always regret selling my d2
 
Is there a mp3 player that doesnt freeze out there yet?

Ive owned a ipod nano that froze permanently, a zen that froze permanently and my zen mosaic is also prone to occasional lock ups.

I've got a Desire, and the Sansa Clip (original mind, not the clip+ which is slightly better).
The Sansa is better for MP3 playback (sounds slightly better with decent headphones), not to mention lighter, and has a more dependable battery.

Horses for courses, I'm not saying the Desire is bad, it's a great phone, but the Sansa is a good music player for the cash.


@Eames - don't think I've EVER had my Clip freeze on me!
