Are most people good people?

Define: good.

Most people are average, few are evil, few are saintly, lots in the middle.

Yes virtually everyone is good or has what I'd describe as 'good general moral principles'.

Nowadays with the media being what it is, just about everyone generally starts falling into approximately the same moral category. 'Rights' and 'Wrongs' are screamed at us through the TV, newspapers, everywhere (as oppose to, say, Victorian times ... where child abuse for example was never even mentioned in society anywhere ever, and NEVER taught or even mentioned, so people had to form their own judgements of what they thought acceptable with less help on a standard definition of 'nice', so some would not be good and not even know it!).

With greater population and things like CCTV, accountability has also jumped massively. With things like criminal records and video and media, being a nasty person has never been just basically so darned difficult to actually do. Be a nasty peice of work, and you're going to have a nasty old life ..

Most people want to fit in and get on - or at least have some friends or loved ones. This makes them conform. 'Good' is probably the ultimate conformity, rewarding you with the most friends/loved ones! It even rewards you with money to spend how you will - as generally nice people will 'get on up a few notches of the career ladder' as literally bosses like them more. Most people have worked this out even if at a subconscious level...

of course there are exceptions to the rule, including nasty people with riches and loved ones .. but I'm talking about the general rules here ..

Most people are normal (good, kind, however you define it) some just go bad and the exception are angels.

i went for a breakfast at a wetherspoons on wednesday and as i sat down on their nice leather sofa, i noticed a ladys purse had been left there. i handed it to the bar staff, i reckon 99.9% of the users on this forum would have done the same

Most are good in my experience. I don't mean crime fighting good, but just "wont stab you in the back" good.

Society as a whole (and not just in the UK) is generally stupid though. Why else would you need adverts showing how dangerous it is to cross a level crossing with a train is coming. They wouldn't put the advert out unless people were still getting squashed by trains Who doesn't understand this basic premise? In cases like that i'm sorely tempted to say say bugger em. Let Darwin work his magic.

I'd like to consider myself a good human being with respect for other people's lives and values. However, we all falter at some point. However, I generally do put the effort in for others without wanting anything back from it... most people call that being a mug - but hey-ho!

I think in general people are "good" and want to do the right thing - but the modern world doesn't make it easy and unfortunately the bad eggs take advantage of the some of the softer more ignorant but good people in the world.

Most people I've met in life I'd class as good people, although my opinion has dropped a bit since someone deliberately puntured one of the tyres on my car and nicked the valve caps. :(

Unfortunately most people who are classed as good don't take much to stray over the line.

Noble fellows are few and far between. In fact being so seems to get you burnt.

I think as a race we're pretty ugly.

Depends how strictly you define good. In my experience the vast majority of people in the world are fundamentally good in that they will help you out if you're in need etc.

You generally only hear about the bad ones in the media.

Most people are fundementally good, but most will not stand up to evil

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
- Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

I don't know if i can describe my self as "good" sure im nice to the people i see. But the modern western lifestyle i lead contributes to the destruction of habitats and wildlife , the exploitation of children and the deaths of men and women around the globe. Now in a micro sense sure i'm good but in a macro sense you could argue im pretty bad for things which are out of sight and out of mind.

I come across as and everyone thinks I'm a blunt **** (rhymes with lock) but underneath I'm very loyal and caring, only one person that sees it, though.

Not sure if that's relevant to the thread but I just thought I'd add it :p
