Jaywalking?

Is jaywalking only considered an offence in USA and Canada?

Personally I think it is a strange law to be able to fine someone for crossing the road inappropriately.

(sorry if this should this be in the motors thread)

Jaywalking is mainly used in North America; i have seen first hand ..people mainly tourists being told off in NYC.

It has been adopted in other countries around the world but modified, i know some Asian countries use it and Australia / New Zealand have a similiar system in use but i think it's quite lenient.

I got told of for doing it on the US air force base lakenheath by the plod! Lakenheath is in Britain by the way

In 1989 a friend on my course at College was threatened with the offence of Jaywalking by the then RUC - This was at 1pm on a weekday (and he didn't do anything to provoke them or wasn't drunk in any way)

Strangely enough - he simply crossed the road in front of a bunch of them on his way back from his lucnh, with one of them giving him an evil stare before confronting him. :rolleyes:

I think the RUC Policeman stated he was causing a traffic obstruction (even though there wasn't a car about) or something along those lines...... and then proceeded to put his face right up against my friends, before giving him the usual RUC hassle that most people received in 1989 - to see if would get a reaction - then letting him go on his way.

Most of us didn't know what it was then either....

Singapore is one of the strictest countries in the world. I think they lock people up for bring chewing gum into the country.

it should be a crime here too, the amount of people around here who just walk out into 30 mph traffic without looking on a 3 lane busy road is ridiculous especially when theres a pelican crossing not even 100 meters away, accidents waiting to happen.
