That is the qusestion?
and its giving me a headache.............

Should i wait a year or 2 and just get a cheap tv say £300-£400 or bit the bullet and get myself a £1400 tv, ps3, £99 glasses x3 and a high spec htmi cable.

and whats this about 3D htmi cables, im not digging another channel in the wall.

3D is a complete and utter gimmick.

I say get youself a full HD projecter and a 50" lcd for the same money and prepare to be blown away. Use the projector a few times a week for new games and films

Best thing i ever bought. Still amazes me how much attention youd pay to something when it takes up a whole wall in your living room :)

Something like this

Sony Projector

and then spend 500 on your TV

Sony TV

Look around and get them cheaper but you get the point

From a man thats experienced them all i can tell you that its gonna be years before the 3D is better than a good projector at home

edit - looks like the censorship blocked the url but they dont sell them items here so it shouldnt break any rules

Wouldnt consider buying a new tv just now for 3D, there's other things like Google TV that are going to be worth waiting for and you can combine these into your purchase.

I went through the same question a few days ago before I settled and got myself an LG Infinia 47" full LED / LCD.

I hate how much focus is being placed on 3D, even Avatar the best example of 3D is pushing 2D objects into 3D space. I cannot ever buy into the gimmick of it all. The technology is in its infancy, even when Tron comes out; that will be Tron, Toy Story 3D and Avatar.. the rest are going to be fake 3D.

Have you seen the emphasis around REAL 3D now? There are only a few films that fall in that catogory and of those Jason & The Argonauts 2010 (which was awful 3D)

So I don't think there is any point in Investing just yet.

Eh, Avatar was actually filmed in 3D? REAL 3D ( I assume you actually mean RealD is just a brand that provides a certain way of actually displaying 3d content in a cinema, it has nothing to do with how it was made. Agreed that Clash Of The Titans was indeed gash though, all post processed 3d looks rubbish.

Back to the OP, buy a projector and paint your walls and ceiling black. Enjoy.

I'm still confused on this one. How is it a gimmick when it looks totally different

I thought gimmick was more like HD Ready and Full HD and how it's just the resolution, obviously a low resolution on a big monitor would look bad so

Oh right lol

Saw a few in Costco earlier, had a demo set up. Like its cool and all when I watched toy story 3 at the cinema In 3D but couldn't watch it for hours and hours with glasses on

i had a play on 3D equipped PS3 in the states when i went to vegas for honeymoon, its definately worth it.

Problem is that nobody has decided on a standard yet. Active glasses, passive glasses, and theres about 4 different methods of creating the effect inside the set too.

until all this sorts itself out theres no point being an early adaptor imo.

I was playing Motorstorm Pacific Rift in 3D earlier on my 3D tv and found it very immersive, I don't think it's worth upgrading your existing tv to a 3D model if you are happy with the one you have as there isn't much worth watching in 3D at the moment but if you are due an upgrade it might be worth buying one that's 3D compatible if money isn't a problem as there should be a lot of material released next year.

I buy a new tv every 4 years or so regardless so 3D just happened to arrive when i was due an upgrade, I bought my tv based on it's 2D performance and consider 3D a bonus. I am looking forward to playing some more 3D games like GT5 but first and foremost enjoy watching blu-ray movies in 2D with stunning picture quality.

this is another important point

in 2/3 years time they will all be 3D

just like how now just about every 40" or above set is now 1080p.

One thing that bothers me about 3D tv is wearing the glasses! I'd hate to sit in the comfort of my own room wearing some heavy glasses whilst I watch tv!

You only need to wear the glasses to watch the occasional movie or game so I don't have a problem with it and by the time 3D is something we watch regular hopefully the new 3D tv's that you can watch without glasses will be available.

The problem they are having with the no glasses 3D tv's is that you have to sit in the sweet spot right in front of the tv for it too work which could be a problem for a family of four so I think 3D tv with glasses will be with us for a while yet.

I like the look of the 3D tv's whenever we pop into certain high street stores we have a look at them. Had a look at one the other day and the darts was on, One player threw a dart towards you and my missus bloody jumped, it was good. Personally i dont think its worth the money but this is just my opinion.

Not convinced by 3D yet. Spent 2 hours last Saturday in Harrods watching their 3D stuff. Impressive, no doubt, but I cannot see it taking off until the silly glasses gets rid off.

Thats sort of true and not at the same time. There are many standards, used in different situations all ending up with the same thing. There will be no further standardization I think, not a lot left.

BR is progressive frame packed 3d
games is generally side-by-side this generation
TV is side-by-side or top-bottom depending on your provider

The point is any TV/Display can take any of the above and show the frames in the right order and control the glasses/polariser, which they can.

TV's will 99% be Active glasses apart from in pubs etc. Passive sets lose half the resolution straight away (and your losing half to side-by-side already!) so won't be popular in the home.

Here's the question, do you spend £1400+ on a TV, or not that much more on a JVC HD350 from a famous budget hifi retailer, which has awesomely good IQ. That doesn't sound like a particularly difficult decision to me, but then I don't mind putting my room in blackout conditions for serious movie watching.
