Looking for a replacement GPU for my LAN rig which also folds when im not a LAN events. Do people think its worth paying the premium for a SOC over standard? I will be OC'ing the GPU to maximise PPD......

Looking at the 470 but could consider MSI 480 if i go mental..... :)

Anyone running either who could share their impressions..

Kind Regards

I would say the cheapest 470 you can get your hands on and if you're overclocking then one of these to go with it.

The above combination will be cooler and quieter than the 470 SOC, if you don't fancy messing about changing coolers then yes the 470 SOC at £235 is a good deal for what you get.

IMO i'd buy a standard card and overclock myself.. although sometimes, by the time you add a high end cooler it may be worth while. it depends on the price difference.

Tbh given the prices, I would get the super oc version. You might be 15 out of pocket, but there is no risk with the cooler installation and no issues with warranty.

Well a 460 at 800+ core is in 470 performance territory and considering the Gigabyte 460 is only £144 on OCUK, that's the best bank for buck doing the rounds currently. It has an amazing cooler and is silent even when overclocked to the max.

ive never heard of anyone not hitting atlast 800mhz on that card either, mine goes straight to 805mhz on stock voltage and with a .1 voltage bump i got all the way to 830mhz with no artifacts but didnt want to push higher.
67c @ 830mhz under 100% load aswell so still cool.

i just run a modest oc on mine 715 > 775 and usually the card stays around 62c at load with the fan speed never going above 60%

ill OC more when games really need it

+1 470, Overclock it > 800/1600/1800 about 1.000mv, make a fan profile 50%max > temps will be around the 70'c > the fan willl be a lot quiter. I tried it myself before l watercooled my 470 and your performance will be close to a 480.
