I was waiting for the 6970\6950\580GTX and currently have no gaming card. I have a simple setup, 3GHZ PH2 Quad, 4GB DDR2, 850 Psu and game at 1920 X 1080. Have Fallout NV sitting waiting to play, also Fallout 3, Crysis, Far Cry 2 and will probably buy Crysis 2 when it appears. Now I suspect from what other posters have said and Gibbo's veiled hints and NV's past history that the 580GTX will be around £450, ruling it out for me which leaves the 6970\6950. I have around £320 so my question is do I need the 6970\6950 or do you think I would be better with a 6870\470\460(top end fast one)and then I could also get an SSD and would that setup be better. Thanks for any input guys this is doing my head in.:)

100% get an SSD for your OS for me it's the best single upgrade I have ever done.. Wait for 6950/70 pricing and performance figures, it's the wise thing to do. If they fail then a 470/6870 would be a good choice with an SSD on top, it's not as if there are many titles that even push a 460.

For those games, you may also want to be looking at both 470s and 480s. Do not know much about Crysis 2 to be fair, but unless it completely smashes all available cards like its predecessor did back in the day, you should not really have to be looking at new technology/vapourware in order to enjoy your gaming.

Thanks Raven but what I'm asking is should I go with the best graphics card I can afford, taking into account my setup, or get the lesser cards, 470\6870 etc AND be able to afford a smaller SSD at around £100.:)

Ah Raven your edit answered my question. Thanks Stulid and Porcelina I would hate to get the 470\6870 and then find in six months they were struggling.:)

I would wait to see what the prices and performance is like for the AMD cards then make up your mind.

As for the SSD they are a great upgrade but they wont give you any extra eyecandy in your games and prices are always falling. Personally I would buy the best card you can afford and upgrade to an SSD later on down the road. :)

For me, as money is always tight, I only upgrade on my birthday or at Xmas, so after this upgrade that will be it until 3rd August 2011.:(

With an SSD you're going to see it's benefits all the time you're using the PC and not just when gaming like with a GFX card. A 470 is more than enough to run todays and forthcoming titles, need more performance? then overclock it to 480 speeds.

You are selling it to me Raven and what are your thoughts on this or this.:)

Have to admit I really really like the look of the Gigabyte.

Yeah for that extra £20 you get a way better cooler and a decent factory overclock, SOC would be my choice. Saying that, would you not kick yourself if the 6950 comes out in a few week and hammers the 470 and costs £250.

See my sig.

I played Fallout 3 at max settings with a 260 GTX 216 @ 1920*1200 with absolutely no problems, and very smooth. For those games you mention a 470 is EASILY going to be enough.

I would say that a 260 was NOT enough for something like BCBF2 with everything (except HBAO) on max though. Some games are just coded badly and there is nothing but raw grunt to help those.

Can't speak for the SSD, but I can only imagine that in games where you've stretched your limit on the memory a SSD is going to find data significantly faster than an HDD.

No not really I'm fairly sensible about that sort of scenario and as long as the 470 is good enough thats all that matters. That Gigabyte SOC is pretty much a 480 at its OC is it not.:)

Thanks Scougar I'm almost there, I've pretty much decided on the 470 though I would have preferred a price around £200. Gonna have a quick check round competitors first but the gigabyte Soc looks favourite at the moment.

Thats fair enough mate. If it was my money I would wait for all the new cards to be released and then make up my mind. You might find that a current gen card might be suitable for your needs and allot cheaper than what they are selling for today. :)

Hi mate, I know, like me, you are waiting for the 6970 but I am basically questioning whether I need a card that powerful(assuming it is )for my needs or if I would be better going with a 6870\470\460 and also the SSD as a bonus with the money saved from not buying 6970\6950.:)
