Ich Bin Ein Derviner

I don't understand all the diesel hating. I'd have a 320d before a 320i any day, the diesel would wipe the floor with the petrol.

It's not manual, it just uses knobs instead of buttons. Looks a bit cheap I agree.

It's a bit different than that. The E60 has two climate control systems - normal and advanced. Both use twirly knobs instead of butons but the more basic system has cheaper feeling plasticy knobs, is not dual zone, has no solar load sensor, has no fogging sensor, doesn't have automatic recirculation. There is something else it doesnt do as well - auto vent control I think?

It does the job but the fact it exists at all on a car like the E60 is inexcusable. None of the facelift E39's had anything but the full climate control system.

It boggles my mind why BMW do this sort of thing.

That is because the 320i is crap. One thing in its favour though is it isn't clatterly and doesn't send vibrations through the cabin like a 320d. I'd have a 320d over a 320i, though.

It's also more powerful in bhp terms than the petrol model as well.

It is weird, it seems the <2.5 litres diesels are faster than their petrol counterparts, but the 3.0 and 3.5 petrols are faster than the diesel versions.

I always thought you got more BHP from petrols and diesels, but on smaller engines it seems the other way round. Or is it just BMW engines? They should do what merc do and stick a small eaton supercharger on them to redress the balance:P

the air con controls are really poor, lack of front window demisting is so weird on what i consider to be such a high calibre car.

I think its probably because the BMW 2 litre diesels are the focus of massive amounts of R&D because they really are the biggest seller in the range and crucially important. Whereas the 2 litre petrols are... not really.

The 320i's are properly unloved though. I found a 2009/09 320i M Sport Coupe with 18k miles on it, professional navigation, bluetooth and USB interface as well as full cream leather, in black for... £18k the other day.

It's virtually brand new!

Ok so I gotta ask, how come you didn't go for a 330d?

Isn't the ocuk motors usual train of thought that you might as well get a 330 instead of a 320?

I love the look of this version of the 5 series, one of the best looking cars BMW have made imo. Aggressive yet smooth and classy. :)

The train of thought is no matter what 6 cylinder engine you get the running costs are always the same - so get a 330i over a 325i for example.

A 520d is 4 cylinder and over the 30k Will said he would be driving would probably be a lot cheaper to run than a 330d.

who should i take it to for the remap?

Evolve over in Luton is who I'd use. Also they'll stick it on the rollers and check for any error codes too if you want. Don't want some bloke turning up to your drive without having a clue if the engines putting out what it should or if it's got loads of error codes logged.

oh, how do i add speed cameras to the pro sat nav?
You need to get the disc out the car (or acquire ;) a newer one online) and rip it to your computer. Then follow the nerdy instructions over on X5world to add the sites from a database (I use PocketGPSWorld) as POIs.

If all the nerdy stuff isn't your thing (or you're not like my Dad and have a son to do it for you:p) there's a nice program Pimp-My-Nav that does the nerdy stuff for you. Just give it an unmolested Nav DVD and the scameras database files and bob's your uncle.

Absolutely, it just makes no sense that they'd include a version of the climate that doesnt have features like this

Even though I agree it should have been standard, I'm surprised the original owner didn't spec the advanced climate control considering how much they obviously spent on the other options (leather, media pack, heated seats etc.)

Looks nice though :)

It wouldnt stop me buying a BMW (and hasnt in the past on a few occasions), but its still a pet hate that they didnt bother and something i really notice. Its not a new pet hate, its just that it has been brought to the surface with the frosted interior pic showing it up :p

Renault do it as well ;)
