Pls spec me a quiet 500-600W power supply. Update: Thanks now ordered!

I originally posted this as part of this Graphics card post. My last post in that thread describes gives a bit more detail. I don't particularly want modular. Would pay more for better reliability, noise levels and general future proofing.

Thanks for any advice.

my tower sits next to me on the floor, i cant hear the psu at all, its a corsair 850tx i dont see why the lower watt ones would be any noisier

all i hear is the 200mm fans, and they are quiet because they arent hi reving

I've been using Corsair power supplies for myself and friends can't fault them, heard good things about Be Quiet, OCZ are ok as well. One thing l've learnt off this forum is do not skimp on your power supply. Can't under stand why you don't want modular, you use just the cables you need which makes it easier to keep your case tidy.

One of the top two, you can't go wrong [reliability, noise levels low and good future proofing]

i wanted to skimp on my psu [it was my first build] i think people think that as it doesnt directly increase performance whats the point.. but yes as always said, it can obviously destroy every other part!

i almost went modular but it was too expensive

No reason to get the HX650W really when the XFX 650w is £30 cheaper and of a superior Seasonic M12D build.

BeQuiet PSU's are mainly painfully average FSP builds and that OCZ Modxstream is below-average and overrated by 100w.

I would get the XFX, OP, as it's at a good price.

Sapphire 625W.
Corsair HX650W.

The Sapphire has disappeared from OCUK recently, unsure why, I bought one for 50quid.

I bought the Corsair HX650W for around 90quid too, superb PSU.

Brilliant, thanks everyone for all the advice.

Given that I don't particularly want modular (big case so the unused wires will be easy to tidy away) I'll go with that advice and save the £30.

I was tempted by the Zalman and also by Nesteq ASM X-Zero Heat-piped Cooled Semi-Fanless especially their low noise but they only benefit from 3yr warranty compared with 5 for the XFX and 7 for the HX650.

Thanks again everyone.

The XFX is modular aswell, but there aren't many PSU's OCUK sell that would be a better choice than the XFX, unless you feel like spending a lot more.

Both PSU's reviewed > Corsair HX650 + XFX Pro Series 650, read the reviews make your own mind up -

Corsair 7yrs Warranty, thats confidence for you - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/revie...650w-power-supply-introduction-packaging.html

XFX 5yrs Warranty - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/revie...s-650w-750w-and-850w-review-introduction.html

Both the xfx and corsair are just re-branded seasonics m8, just one cost more. If you really wanted confidence you'd plum for a seasonic psu that actually say seasonic on the side seeing as the ones they make for third parties aren't quite as good.

It's all relative though since any seasonic > competition. They're the only dedicated psu manufacturer.

This is incorrect, the Corsair HX series (except the 520 and 620) are made by CWT.

Namsik. If you want a seriously quite fan cooled PSU then IMO it's hard to beat a Nexus. They are high quality and extremely quiet. You can check this for yourself my reading the reviews at hardwaresecrets (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/859/1) and silentpcreview (http://www.silentpcreview.com/Nexus_NX-5000), as well as any other review you can find/read.

I don't really see the need to get the longest warranty around, if a PSU isn't mistreated and it lasts a year, then it's unlikely to have problems after that.

actually your info is incorrect, only the HX1000 is a CWT model.

From the Jonnyguru review of the HX 850. Green tape - CWT.

Taken from the OC3D review, again green tape.

Strangely the HX 1000 is made by CWT but doesn't have green tape it in...

Altho I stand corrected on the HX 650.

Thanks again. I ordered the XFX and graphics card before the latest posts so I 'll just have to see how quiet it is.

The sapphire is even cheaper than the XFX, and AFAIK is still good enough quality, and is modular (tho not as modular as the corsair hx!). Seems to be the best choice to me imho, unless I'm missing something?

How about a Seasonic X650.

My rig has a 450w peak load, and even in summer the fan is totally stationary.

The only time the X650 fan is activated is at start up, it's just a twitch of the PWM to assure you it's not broken!

There is also no capacitor hums or anything from the X650, together with above it's dead silent.

I paid £91 new for my X650. The Seasonic based XFX above looks good value however.
