Yes, of course, they have a point. I shouldn't buy the car I want, but instead buy the car some snot nosed kids who drive big wafters tell me to buy.

Mike, Please, Stop taking the forum so damn seriously. Take a step back and perhaps you'll see that through all of the jibes, fun poking and mockery we are only trying to help. And that is a collective "We". We laugh and joke and take the mick, but I don't think a single one of us wants you to waste your money and/or end up disappointed.

This isn't a matter of us taking the **** out of a car people we don't "understand" it, or don't want you to have it for some reason, it's us taking the **** out of a car because given your situation and your previous posts it seems like a bit of a rubbish buy.

The RX8 - Made loads of sense. The STI RA - Made a decent amount of sense. An ageing hatchback that isn't really as good as the scene tax would perhaps suggest and has had a string of owners in a hilariously short period - Does not compute. Add to the fact that the owner is seemingly not happy with your initial offer, you still haven't driven one and the fact that it's pretty much on the otherside of the country just seems like it is a really bad idea.

Mike - read that as if it was someone elses thread, can you not see the entire worlds point?

And my DC2 and I clearly fall into that category and so do the other members.

Clearly......

Regarding insurance for test drives, I just ring up my insurance and ask for temporary insurance on another car, the minimum is iirc a week. But that's only if I'm serious about buying a car from a private sale.

Under 25? How much does that usually sting you?

We've settled the insurance thing, he didnt actually drive them.

I know, i'm just interested in how much Shimmy pays as i'm going to be under 25 for a while yet, it'd be useful to know :p

Hang on, you think I should avoid the EK9 and buy an EP3 or a 182?

Where I finally need to buy a car I want.

My shortlist;
RX8
UK DC2
E36 M3
Impreza RA
Evo 5

No EK9, same as no Ep3 or 182.

My requirements:
Something that'll be used to go out when the OH is out, or needs the Focus, and for weekends, as well as a few trackdays a year. It needs to be capable of transporting the little one, so two seaters are out.

Quite easily fits an EP3 or 182.

Budget: ~£5k.

So that puts an EP3 and 172/182 in the price range and an EK9 out of the price range (as they are all worth £6k+ apparently for good ones and they're never gonna lose any value).

My thoughts are that I really want an RX8, but I kind of think that a weekend car should be a bit faster. On the plus side, I love the image, the feel, driving position, noise and value for money that the RX8 offers.

An EK9 offers poor value for money.

I am of course open to other suggestions, but I really cannot decide - hell, I've even considered just sticking the money in a savings account and insuring the Strada - I'm that torn.

Going for being 'that torn' to knowing you 100% are going to get an EK9 without even test driving one or viewing one for sale in the matter of a few days.

I'm not going to entertain responding to everything individually, but in summary;

I don't want an EP3 or 182.
~£5k is the price range for an EK9
Whilst the EK9 may offer poor VFM it offers much lower running costs and suffers little from depreciation.

Yes, I was torn because there was one "cheap" option, and I decided that was the best course of action.

Thanks.

How have you made this decision without ever having driven an EK9?

You claimed the RX8 offered great value but was not fast enough. The EK9 is slower?

What makes you think a 13 year old Honda will be cheap to run? Surely most of it will be worn out now simply through age and require replacement. Nothing lasts for ever?

Each MOT is going to become a nail biter. Will it need new suspension to scrape through? Will it rust?!

Look forward to seeing it at the Brighton meet :D

The RX8 has its downsides too, its significantly more thirsty, and carries greater risks of bigger bills.

The EK9 isn't slower, but is irrelevant. If I could have an RX8 with EK9 running costs, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but I'm being sensible and opting for the cheaper option long term.

Who told you that you MUST have either one of those?

Really? Your handsome offer that was almost certainly around £5k prompted the seller of the car you have your eye on to put it on eBay rather than jump at your offer. The owner's club claim that they are £6k+ cars and even the previous owner of the car itself said that it's a £6k+ car if it weren't for the colour.

Whilst the EK9 may offer poor VFM it offers much lower running costs and suffers little from depreciation.

Talking about running costs on a hoon/weekend car is just sad. Plus the fact that none of the cars on your shortlist are going to exactly haemorrhage money on depreciation. We are talking about older sports cars that have already lost the chunk of their value, not you buying a brand new Maserati

Yes, I was torn because there was one "cheap" option, and I decided that was the best course of action.

Is the EK9 your "cheap" option!?

A £1,000 Xsara VTS is the cheap opinion. A £5k+ car that does more or less EXACTLY the same thing isn't.
