Gone from OcUK Titan Sabre, to Apple iMac i7... I want to go back!

Hello fellow overclockers.
So yes, as the title suggests, I bought the Titan Sabre from Overclockers about a year ago. Lovely, snappy machine (AMD 3.30GHz dual core, 4 GB RAM), which I bought with a 22" monitor. Gaming was a smooth run with the HD 4890... Really just no issues at all.

Then about two months ago Apple released their updated iMacs... A bit of an impulsive decision I admit - I gave my brother the Titan Sabre and practically bankrupt myself getting the 27" i7 2.93GHz iMac. Got it almost completely kitted out with the upgraded processor, 2TB HDD, 8 GB RAM, and the AppleCare plan... Couldn't afford their extortionate SSD upgrade.

Two months on and I'm feeling slight regret. The main thing that led me to buy it was the access to Apple's software, Logic Pro... That, and the fact that on paper this is a more powerful machine in its compact & stylish form factor than my Titan Sabre is... Apple's allure can be intoxicating if you let it.

My main issues with it is, Logic Pro is brilliant but actually very similar in functionality to Cakewalk Sonar which I was using in Windows... The graphics card is only just sufficient enough to run games. Metro 2033 is unplayable unless I use "ugly" settings - the GPU is marketed as an ATI HD 5750, but actually it is a Mobility 5850... Apart from the RAM, This machine is simply not upgradeable. It is pretty much a glorified laptop... The thought of what 2.2K could have bought me in the realms of PC, is beginning to make me sick.

Deep down I think I knew all of this at the time, but was blinded by the half-bitten Apple logo hitting me constantly on the forehead, right between the eyes, while Steve Jobs repeatedly prodded me with a stick, saying "place order, place order!"

Thing is, I realised that I want a decent GPU. I want to be able to upgrade individual components as and when. I want an SSD. I want to be able to afford a loaf of bread.

So, I am devising a plan to sell my iMac and use the £££ to get a PC system. I'm not sure whether I should get another OcUK pre-built system, or attempt to build one myself... Any help appreciated as I literally have no experience on building a custom PC.

I don't think I could go back to a 22" monitor, but I have noticed there are some 27" monitors on OcUK for around £260, so that's that. Processor-wise, I have my eye on the AMD Phenom II X6 3.20GHz, which seems able to overclock safely to 4.00GHz... Similarly priced, the Intel Core i7 3.06GHz seems able to safely overclock to 4.30GHz... I'm only torn between these two because I believe AMD is cheaper, but I've experienced Intel's hyper-threading on the iMac, which impresses me for some reason...
Mobo-wise, the only thing I'd like on there is some USB 3.0 & SATA III capability...
GPU - I have absolutely no idea! I noticed on this forum you guys discussing the new GTX 580, and also ATI's HD 6970. I'm not sure if these would be too expensive for me, or is there a cheaper option, like crossfiring two cheaper GPUs? I don't know anything about this but have heard of it...

I will stop there for now because I've gone on way too long... Any input from anyone would be greatly appreciated indeed!

- Andrew

a mac for gaming??? :p oh dear

anyway an i5 750 would be a good bet for gaming - dead socket yeah but would still do the deed for you for a couple of years - they clock well too

Oh dear :( - I have a new 21.5' Mac at work. I would NEVER trade in my lovely PC. Is there any chance of upgrading the GPU? say to a Mobility 5870?

If it was to be for gaming then the i5 is a great way to go.

I think that a lot can be learnt and a greater appreciation of each component can be obtained if you build your own.

I would personally not want to buy a built pc as I would not want to void anything by upgrading bits or bobs. But at the same time I appreciate that the warranty itself can be reassuring.

Unfortunately not, which is part of the frustration I initially thought wouldn't bother me. The only thing the iMac has the possibility to upgrade, is an SSD. However, even that looks to be a gruesome task, as it involves removing the 27" screen (!),changing cables, and securing the SSD in place using velcro! Even the thought of it scares me.

My mind is made up on selling the iMac and going back to PC, it's just the options that are a head-****.

I've had some time today to do some speccing, and came up with what I think would be an awesome system,

- Processor = AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.20GHz

- Mobo = ASUS Crosshair IV AMD 890FX

- CPU Cooling = Corsair Hydro H70

- RAM = 2 x 4GB Corsair XMS3

- HDD = 2 x WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache

- Monitor = Hanns.G HZ281HPB 27.5"

All of this on Overclockers comes to £975.51 but I've managed to get it down to £865 from other sources... Obviously I need a case, and a GPU. I'll stick an SSD on my christmas list...

Do you guys have any recommendations for a good case, and would you make any tweaks to this list so far? The GPU is such a difficult decision to make, there are so many options, opinions, etc...

Over the top cooler :p Get the H50 instead!
What sort of case do you want?
I would wait for the upcoming 6900 series ;)

I have no idea! I've never done this DIY PC thing before - the last PC I owned was an OcUK pre-built one... I guess just something that would be sufficient to house the above components? GPU-wise, yeah - I need to sell my iMac first anyway so thats gonna take... However long it takes! ... I do like the idea of trying an Nvidia though, since the last card I had was ATI... I just wonder if both their new releases will be too expensive for me, and maybe I could crossfire two GTX 470s or something as a cheaper alternative...

Mac's are for real work

PC is for games

PCs are a million miles ahead in every sense for work and gaming.

I have both, I am forced to use the iMac for programming iphone apps. it sucks.

anyway back on topic: you should be able to get quite a bit second hand for you mac - one thing they are good for is holding value.

Yeah I really hope so, it's only 2 months old and although I got HE discount, the full price of it all comes to around £2200.
I also agree on the PC being a million miles ahead for work and gaming. I feel very limited with the iMac. Style over substance is definitely key here, which I know is stating the obvious. Just wish I hadn't bought into it, fool that I am!

I live by two simple rules...

Portability = Apple (I have a MacBook Pro + iPhone 4)

Desktop = Windows 7 PC (sig)

The best of both worlds ;)

GOOD RULES! To be honest my iPhone 4 is quite adequate for an Apple-fix, I've realised that a powerful desktop is much more important in terms of productivity, and of course gaming.

I have just made the same backward leap as you are about to.
I wasnt happy with the imac's defects (tinted screen, loud hdd's, screen bleeding, whining capacitors) so ditched it and went back to a desktop PC. I'd be loving it, if my ram gpu and psu didnt all have to be RMA'd as defective :D

Ironic.

What can a Mac do a PC can't????

WoW, just checked the price via google about £1,800 and OP got XTRA'S > oh dear.

Salt in the wound, man, salt in the wound

Not too worried about the loss I make selling - I reckon I'll still get enough funds from it to build a twice as powerful system and have change left

Ohh! I completely forgot to include power supply in my pricing...

Make sure it's a decent brand PSU ;)
There are many cases to choose from, would you like a compact quiet one? Could go with a cheaper motherboard too, the crosshair IV is a lovely board but if you don't plan to crossfire, I would get something cheaper.
