So i have the black ops system which has an overclocked cpu which is a Intel i7 950 3.06GHz - 4.00GHz.

Now when i bought it i asked to upgrade the ram from 6 to 12 because i thought i may need it for my 3d work, having been used to having 8gig. But i was told it wasnt possible due to the overclock.

A few people said 6 would be fine but in just my 2nd project on this computer ive ran out of ram continually resulting in the program crashing lots.

So the obvious answer is to buy another 6 gig of ram though the guys at ocuk said i would have to take the overclock off if i did so. Though being a noob with computers can someone explain why thats the case.

And is there no way to say re-overclock it once i have all 12 gig in the machine?

Yes there is, you can go into the BIOS and re-laod the overclock profile however it will more than likely be unstable due to the extra memory installed.

You may be able to overclock the system but only very slightly, (3.2GHz-3.4GHz) at a push depending on how strong the memory controller on your chip is. However it is something I would not recommend.

Overclocking with 12gb of ram is much the same as with 6, it just takes (considerably) more patience. I can't follow why Nath is recommending you try the profile the machine came with, as there isn't a chance in hell it'll be stable with the additional ram.

If however you put it back to stock, then put the extra ram in, and overclock it yourself, that'll work fine. I'd suggest trying to overclock it to 4ghz with only 6gb present as a learning exercise beforehand.

As for 3.2 - 3.4ghz, there's a few people on here with 12gb of ram stable at 4ghz. I was stable as far as benchmarks were concerned at 4.2, and pretty close at 4.4. It just takes longer to get there.

Programs shouldn't crash when they run out of memory btw, you haven't disabled virtual memory / swap or anything like that have you?

In my past experience with 3dmax it does seem to crash when the ram runs out, you can watch it in the performance tab in windows task manager and when it goes too low the program quits. Though i'm not 100% deffinite thats the case though i'm sure ive also heard others say the same.

But no i havent changed anything at all since getting it.

Why is it so much more unstable to overclock with 12 gig as opposed to 6?

Ok having asked in a few of my 3d forums as well i think more ram is the best bet and take the OC off.

When i asked about this in the past people said it was as simple as going into the bios and changing profiles.

Before i do that can i just doubly doubly check that is the case. I really dont want to do it then find out later there was a step i missed out meaning another computer went bust as i really cant do without my computer even for a day.

Thanks

Fair enough ^ :)

If you go for 12gb of ram, and reset to defaults in the bios, it may be unstable anyway. My UD5 & 12gb Corsair isn't stable with the bios defaults, even with the processor at stock speeds. It needs more voltage on qpi, and probably a bit over 1.5V on the ram too. It'll make it into windows at stock, and get a short distance into stress testing, then fail.

So I think your options are to learn about overclocking and cope with a days downtime (even if only trying to get it stable at stock speeds), or to change your modelling in 3dmax so it uses less ram. It really shouldn't crash when it runs out, just slow down lots as it starts to treat the hard drive as ram.
