Handbrakes and MOT's

This is an interesting point, I'd never thought of this before.

I can't say I've ever been asked if any of my cars have an LSD, though. I assume its the customers responsibility to inform the tester?

no

it should say when the inspector puts in the reg number in the pc...

No idea.

He did say he was amazed at how clean it was and that he had never seem anything like it. He told me to hang onto it! I am going to be stuck in an old 5 Series for ever :(

This is your problem... your 530 is in such amazing condition it will take you another 3 years of searching to find a replacement 335i to your standard ! (but who cares when you have a 3.0 straight six?)

Don't ever sell the 530. Work hard enough towards owning the 530 and another car ;)

When you're 83, you can donate it to a museum where they can scratch their heads at this fossil fuelled shiny beast.

Perhaps he has a point?

Either way,nice result.

one my old cars failed on handbrake it was 13% on the readout on the rollers, turned out one of the callipers needed a good clean as it wasn't moving right on the cable
i just went home cleaned everything up and reset it and it passed

My MX5's handbrake is naff. I have to adjust it every year before the MOT. They do test it but I think it's ok as long as it will hold the car, even if that involves pulling it up as far as it goes. I don't have access to my fail document from a few years back, I think an advisory is more likely than a fail.

It failed one year on rear brake efficiency, to which they replied it wasn't possible to adjust them. Needless to say I offered to go in there and give them a demonstration

I'm echoing this. When I first drove it, it was to reverse off the drive. I moved back into the intended position but hadn't realized the handbrake was still on. It didn't even put up a struggle. It's that useless!

Keeps it in position just fine on steep slopes and the like, but I wonder how much of a struggle it really is for the handbrake. Good thing MX5s are light...

Mine failed as even all the way up it didn't work well enough, too many clicks were required. The tester seemed to want it to meet the requirements after 7-8clicks

The handbrake is also an emergency brake so it needs some braking in reserve.

The hand brake travel is only a fail if there is no "reserve Travel" in other words if it has reached it's mechanical limit.
It has to reach 16% efficiency to pass or 25% on old single circuit systems.

With the introduction of MOT Computerisation the VTS device or MOT computer has the testers manual built in and "No Reserve travel" is a reason for rejection (fail)

Hope this helps.

EDIT... if the MOT tester suspects that it is close to "No Reserve Travel" it is only a "Pass and Advise" situation.

As a rule I always tighten to 3 or 4 clicks, if im fussy jacking 1 wheel up at a time and spinning the wheel to make sure it spins freely if applying maximum tightness. dont want me drums to overheat now  simplez dont know what all the fuss is about :) if it needs excessive play then ur cable or drum system is nackered

MOT passed, no advisories too

I was unimpressed with their complementary vacuuming though...

Mine has now been fixed, and it's amazing, doesn't go past the first notch and it holds firm on a silly steep bridge, and it cost less than expected.

You paid £25 to get your car hoovered, as thats how much your MOT cost than mine ;)

My MOT cost £25 more than yours? So you got your MOT done for £30?!

I paid £27.49. The same as I always pay (Except for once in 2006 when BMW did it as the car was under warranty).

Numerous places offer discounted MOT's. There is no need to pay £55 for an MOT.

Surely that's a deal MOT or some offer?

If not then...where so I can go there next time as long as it's fairly close :p

Nationwide, got one just down the road from home. Could have told me this beforehand ffs!
