Hey everyone,

Sorry if this is the wrong section but it seemed the best section to post in.

When i start up a NZB and "grabit" starts downloading, it starts at around 18mb/s. How ever after a few seconds it falls to around 10mb/s.

Why would this be happening? Could my university be throttling the connection?

Thanks

Try using SSL Ports? I would have thought if they were throttling they would be throttling more than that.

Could you be using too many connections? so that when they start loading them all it starts thrashing your connection thus reducing the speed?

I was under the impression that university networks limited you anyway on speed?

Ditch grabbit and use Sabnzbd+, it is infinitely better. As said above, try using SSL servers and ports if you have this option. Your university is highly likely to be blocking or throttling ports that are commonly abused with illegal activity, ironic as it was at university that usenet was born :p

Always happens to me too, I have a 20mb line from VM, get a peak at about 3.5MB/s for a second or two and then settlers at the correct 2.4MB/s for the rest of the download.

I use Alt.Binz which is free and it does everything I need.

It would help if you could provide us who your broadband provider is and also which usenet provider you use.

I have it set to download 32 files, next time i download something ill reduce it to 20, and see if it helps.

Well my university speed changes quite a lot, sometimes its as high as 99mb/s others its all the way down to 6mb/s!

Ill check out "sabnzbd+" thanks! Not sure about SSL servers and ports, ill have a look though.

Not sure on the broadband provider as i am at university.

My usenet provider is astraweb.

You only get 20 connections on Astraweb though?

Couldn't work out sabnzbd+, wouldn't work for me!
Shame grabit crashes so darn much :/

Change your server to ssl-eu.astraweb.com and the port to 443 or 563, making sure you check the box for encrypted!

Could just be compression of headers, as well as Grabit downloading with threads before the one thread that measures bandwidth catches up.

Also agree with getting SABnzb, its a lot better than Grabit which use to have threads die and stop on me all the time.

Just checked and its already set up that way. Just trying sabnzbd+ now.

My maximum for astraweb is 50 connections, not sure why yours is 20 :S.

I hate that with grabit, i used to have to restart it becase it would just decide to stop downloading mid way.

Try to use the VM server as much as possible though for all the newer stuff that's on there.

Whats VM server?

Virtual machine :S

Yeh nothing worse, especially when you wanted it to shutdown when finished as well, which it won't do because its stuck :(

Have just set up Sabnzbd+, where do i get NZB files from? :S

It seems a bit more confusing then grabit which is one thing i do like about grabit.

I take it you do the pay by download? that's why you can use upto 50 connections. I would still recommend trying it with less though. As someone mentioned above most people only need about 10 connections.

Not really allowed to talk about that on here.

sabnzbd+ will do everything for you, verify, repair if needed, and extract. Anything that seems a little confusing just read the help wiki, there is loads of stuff in that.

https://www.binsearch.info

is a usenet search engine, afaic it is no worse linking to that than it is linking to google. It doesn't list nzb's as such but the parts, select what you want and make your own nzb.

Yeah pay by download, i will reduce it to 10 and see what happens.

Thought it might be a little dodgy asking, but then i havent said i will be downloading anything illegally :)

Is there any better USENET providers than astraweb?

also Thanks valentino.

Giganews is another provider

I use nzbget which is a cli app but might give the one mentioned above. I have set my .conf file to use 14 connections which is.more than enough. Maxes out my 18.5mb connection

hmm, seems i have been using way to many connections.

Could someone explain why less connections would be better then more?

sorry im a noob aha.

Could someone explain to me how usenet works? Do I just download said client (like bittorrent), then register for a .nzb usenet and hey presto?

Or do I have to subsricbe to a usenet service and enter server details into the client then open nzb files?
