Jets can leave con-trails hundreds of miles long in the right conditions. In these circumstances, due to the curvature of the earth, it looks like they meet the ground.

The problem with the jet idea is that a jet passes the camera towards the end of the clip (upper right corner) - and doesn't leave any trail :?

After all, launching missiles is a national pastime in America. (In fact, I have done so myself once - schoolboys + rocket competition is great!).
