Hi,

We just booted up Black Ops (PS3) and started the campaign. It looks shocking, there's absolutely no way it is in anything above standard definition.

Has anyone else had this problem? There is no way of changing the settings within COD itself.

On the system menu on the PS3 it says it is in 1080p, we're playing on a 50 inch LG Plasma which is fully 1080p compatible.

Cheers

Have you checked the 720p box on the console display settings?

Quite a few PS3 games say 1080p on the back of the box, but don't actually support it, which means PS3s with 1080p checked and 720p unchecked will display those games in standard definition.

I'm fairly sure BLOPS isn't a 1080p game at all, so it's going to display at the lowest common denominator instead of scaling up.

Well it actually is sub hd same as 360 version, check out EG tech comparision, PS3 version has lower res than even 360.

However its not that bad and is still good regardless.

Resolution isn't everything. Alan Wake used 960x544 or something close to that, but it was just a fine looking game.

Pc is the only way to go if you want to stay at the cutting edge of graphics/resolution and so on. Hardware is constantly evolving and progressing.
I remember playing left 4 dead 2 for the first time on xbox after having played it at 1920x1200 at around 100fps for so long on the pc.
I couldn't believe how bad it looked and how badly it ran. An hour later, I'd forgotten all about it and was having just as much fun as I was on the pc.

THIS.

If a game does its job and immerses you, you'll forget about the technicalities and have fun. If a game is not that good, you'll start nitpicking and noticing graphical anomalies and whathaveyou.

how is the framerate on the ps3 version? mine should arrive tomorrow but i have been hearing that some people have had slowdown while others seem to think it runs fine

I don't think the OP was necessarily referring to how it looks at the supposed 720p setting guys - even at 600p upscaled to 720p it looks very clean and of a standard you'd expect on 360/PS3. It's very likely his game is genuinely at standard definition and he's overlooked something.

It's easy to start the whole 'it's not really HD' discussion when CoD is mentioned, but I don't think that's actually it in the OP's case. The series have always looked fine, and better looking than a lot of other games, especially for how smooth it runs.

I guess the only way we'll know is to ask the OP if the menus and HuD elements are still sharp, or extremely large on the screen and blurry. The menus and HuD elements are rendered in 1280x720 and displayed on top of the render.

Re the menus and HuD elements, I can't check now as the game is my housemates and he's taken it elsewhere tonight. The TV says the signal is full 1080p coming from the HDMI. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I could swear MW2 looked much sharper. I don't really know what else to do though we've tried various combinations in the display settings menu, it's currently set to automatic. I'll check out how crisp the HuD elements are tomorrow.
