Rioting in London?

I didn't see too much of this on TV as I was working, but the one bit I did catch made me laugh. It was some spotty student, about 18, saying something like "Recession and riots, reminds me of the Thatcher era" which I thought was pretty rich coming from someone who probably wasn't even born when Thatcher was in power.

And then another guy saying the rioting shows how much anger there is towards the increase in fees. Err, no mate, it just means your protest got hijacked by the usual anarchists and good for nothings.

I still don't understand why the world and his dog wants to go to university. I left education at 16 and now earn more and have better career opportunities than the majority of people I know that got degrees. It may be the right choice for some, but I feel a lot of students just feel its something they MUST do.

I work in a few secondary schools and all they do is ram the Uni route down the students throats. Really annoys me when i hear it. Ones who dont want to go are made to feel worthless

A sensible chap this

If having to pay for a degree has the effect of potentially dissuading individiuals from taking on degree, this can only be a good thing. It may make people pause and consdier whether its necessary or worht it to do so. For some it will not be, and this saves them time, and reduces the overall cost of the provision of education unnecessarily.

University should be available to all (and it will be post charging more for it) but should only be undertaken by a person where there's a clearly identifed point in so doing.

The thing I find funny about that photo isnt actually the "main" placard, but the one in the background which says "Feminists against fees and cuts !", not just your ordinary standard student...oh no...no no..not at all...Feminist ! Students. Makes all the difference.

Why?

I think that's why students are protesting, because they fear that is exactly what future students will do, particularly those from less well-off backgrounds.

Do you insist on this imperative that people from less well off backgrounds in particular will be dissuaded from attending University? If you want to go you still can, I came from a very "less well off background", paid a lot for my education (not in the UK) had a student loan, got a job and paid off the debt.

If I can do it, so can anyone else.

What's the problem?

This sign made me chuckle:

I thought the same..

hehe :)

My friend posted this on his Facebook, made me laugh:
"Students in London protesting about higher tuition fees are complaining of police brutality and heavy tactics being used in order for them to disperse.

Police are believed to be using boxes of soap and job adverts."

well i went to the march with my college from cornwall. From what we witnessed there was no violence, that started later and the people involved were not part of the organised protest, they were just there to cause trouble and have a laugh.
I must admit the only reason i went up was to visit london as i had never been before, was a good vibe though and you realise what they say on the news is definitly not always correct.
Best sign i seen was one that said " I dont believe anything, im just here to miss P.E " . It made me chuckle.

except that the media industry is one of our countries biggest earners at the moment...

Where does it earn money from? Public sector workers paid by the taxes of other public sector workers? Consumer credit and the related asset inflation funded by Chinese and German factory owner's malinvestments?

Is a 75% service economy for a country the size of the UK in any way sustainable?
