I bought many things from the usa via fleabay and recently bought two video cards. Now I have to pay a customs fee or parcelforce will not deliver the items. I seem to remember threads on this forum ages ago but is there anything I can do about this charge? Am I right in assuming the seller has put on a higher price which has then got HMRC onto it?

How much did you pay? What were they valued at?

Anything over a basic value of £18ish (double on gift items) will usually get stung on import charges.

Some tend to put things like 'RMA return' to avoid the charges by giving the impression duty was already paid during the initial purchase of the items.

its called import tax

nothing to do with parcel force..

infact they have done you a massive favour by sorting out your bill with customs instead of letting them send them back

How much did you pay for said items?

Whenever you buy something from the US you need to do the following:

Work out the UK conversion price.
Add VAT
Add Import Tax

Is it still worth it?
If it is, then go for it - because if you don't get charged the VAT and Omport Tax you're laughing big time.
However if you are charged you need to know it is still a good deal or not.

It isn't the tax thats the issue. Last time I had to pay tax on an international item (£50 worth) I got stung with an £8 handling charge. Although that was Royal Mail so I'm not sure it it's the same with Parcel Force

Various couriers charge various amounts for the handling charge. You are paying for the luxury of the consignment being cleared quickly under Parcelforces deferment account with HMRC. £8 is actually quite cheap, some companies do charge more than this.
