LG 50" PK590 - first impressions.

Was looking at the 590 on sunday, but decided to go for the 350 instead, as we don't have an ariel, just Sky, so saved £100, plus the 350 has 2x scart which I need for sky + and my DVD recorder (no Sky HD yet).

Love the picture on most channels, but find that channels such as comedy Central, look a little blurry? BBC, ITV, CH4 and Sky1 look sweet, as does the PS3 and 360 over HDMI, were as Comedy Central, well... if there are deep shots, or a shot with two people in it, the focus seems to be a little off, have tried new scart cables etc, but it looks to be the channel is lower quality???

Got the Tv and a nice stand for £700 all in.
Comming from a 4 year old 50" 3 LCD rear projector Sony Bravia, the difference is amazing.

Hi UKD I was going to get the 350 myself but a certain retailer (Aussie tones) had a sale on Sunday and they all walked out the door :( So yesterday on way home called into Richer Sounds in Belfast and they had the 590 for £49 more :)
Can't comment on the Sky channels as the room I have this in doesnt have Sky but as Im sure you read I bought a Humax HD box and so far the programs Ive flicked through have all been very good ... the BBC HD channels have been superb Im really blown away with the quality. What I have found with Sky (in other room on both a CRT and LCD) that yes there can be a big difference in quality from channel to channel.

Cheers DirtyJester... £50 might have swung it but as I said, the 590 did not have the scart connectors I need so I dont mind having the 350, It suits my needs, although an extra HDMI would be nice in case I get Sky HD, but I can always put my 360 back on component as it's just as good...

Just need to talk the good wife into getting HD box LOL

My only complaint is the sound, I have connected the Optical out to my AMP, and sound works fine, but the volume controls do not affect the optical output.... :( I'm used to controlling the sound via the Sky remote, but this is no good for my Amp...

Sorry mate dont have an amp (looks over shoulder for missus)... yet so can't really comment on setup but Im sure there will be a few good people on here that might be able to help. As for HD I only have the BBC HD, BBC 1 HD (new channel started this month) and the odd program on ITV HD (have to tune into channel 977 as UTV have not signed up to show any HD ... yet) all through Freesat ... but hey its free and does look fantastic. Im sure Sky HD is the same if not better.

Well from Googling around, it would seem there is no means to control the volume from the optical output other than to get a universal remote that can control the TV, Sky and my AMP :(

I don't mind having to use the AMP remote for volume, but the wife just ain't tech savy hehe.... Just wanted to keep it simple for her...

You can program the Sky remote to work the TV, Sky and amp....well basic amp functions like on/off, mute and volume up and down but thats all you need on a daily basis right?

I have tried programing the Sky RCU for my amp, at least 8 different codes I found for it, none of them work.. in fact only two even give the two flashes after entering.... looks like my cheap Teac amp is not supported with my Sky remote.

You cant normally control volume on spdif as that its just pass-through. In my experience anyway...

Ok a few questions....
Is is a standard Sky remote or Sky+ or SkyHD? Certainly on a standard Sky remote you need a later revision like rev 8 to enable "punch through" (the volume buttons working the amp rather than TV). Have a look inside the battery compartment for the revision.

What model of TEAC is it?

How are you programming it?
Get it working for the TV on/off, volume etc as usual then do the following for on the Sky remote for the amp:-

Turn amp on
Press TV
Hold Down SELECT and 0 together (double-blink)
enter * * * * (double-blink)
Then hold down SELECT and 1 together (double-blink)

Original thread for the above:- http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=70097
Also see http://www.morlocks.co.uk/remote-setup.htm

In TV mode on the remote the following should be controllable in general;
Left Nav key = Amp on and off
Up/Down Nav keys = TV volume up and down

In Sky mode on the remote the following should be controllable in general;
Volume up and down = amp volume up and down
Mute = mutes the amp volume

I've had a LG 60" PK590 since the summer and cant really fault it. Football in HD was great. Bluray films look amazing. Glad I paid the extra for the 60" as 50" is too small and I would always regret getting a smaller one.

Love it.

Its a Sky+ box and remote Rev 8r, the amp is a TEAC ad-g8800.

The above guides were the same I used plus another site that had more codes.

I'm seriously thinking of getting the 60 inch version of this screen. Can anyone comment on the input lag people have been talking about? Apparently it makes playing FPS and beat em ups unplayable :(

I'm not sure anyone can say a 50inch TV is too small lol.

Trust me when you have got used to a 60" a 50" looks tiny. Glad I payed the extra now. Xbox 360 slim hooked up to mine playing kinect sports is really really good! You really get the best out of the game on a big plasma ;)

I've hooked my pc up to mine and played BFBC2/F1 2010 and was surprised just how well the lg performed. I'm quite sensitive to lag so I would defo pick it up but amazingly it was quite enjoyable and very playable. So I would say lag is pretty low personally. Hope that helps :)

Guys

Mine is running all standard settings. Ive had the TV for around 6 months now and was wondering if there is a guide to getting the best out of the TV by changing some settings

Cheers

Sam
