FOA: Fox

But he's stepped up a league in terms of purchase price hes gone from the 5-10k bracket which in 5 years results in not a lot of value to the 15-20k bracket which in 5 years still will have some value, so i suppose it is sensible to think about it.

The way I see it.

Say Fox buys a 2 year old 330i for £20k and keeps it for say 5 years.

Decent 03 330ci are doing the rounds now for what? £7k?

Not denying that the Merc will lose more money, but when the "safe" option ends up giving you a 13 grand kick in the gut you've got to wonder if it's really worth actively avoiding something because it'll lose money.

If re-sale value is of significance wouldn't it be a better idea to get shot of it sometime mid 12' just before the new comes out. By then the E-Class coupe will have dropped to a 'reasonable' price... then buy one of those. :D

Fox is a spread sheet man aint he, im sure hes given this all maximum thought, some people worry about it more than others i suppose.

If i had kept check on my depreciation in the last 10 years id have Phantom sitting out there next to me Bentley :)

OT: What do you think of the Phantom, you tempted by it? More a sense of occassion with those than something like the FS. You kinda' need driver with one of those, though, eh.

If they were 100k id have a go at one just to say i'd had one and sicken a few of me mates :D

But not at 150k you cant park them and the one i drove i dont think was as nice to drive as a FS to be honest.

But the problem with being all numbers is exactly that - It's about the numbers and not about the cars. As such he's dismissed the Merc, a car that he did seem sort of interested in, because it's going to lose a few extra quid because the new model is out/they don't traditionally hold their values/etc.

Like I said, if it's a long termer Appreciate the car and worry about residual values when it comes to sticking a for sale sign in the window :).

As for the Phantom comment - Come on, I thought you had more taste than that! :p

Residual value isnt the main reason I'd rather have an E92 over an E500 :p

But it is one of the reasons, isn't it? ;)

Nah, it's all good. I can see where you're coming from. £20k is fair wedge of cash, it's only natural for you to want to get as much of that back as humanly possible.

Its just the ultimate **** you to the world aint it :)

But for that money you can have 2 SUPERB cars one Bentley or whatever and something Italian and sporty, saying **** you to the world aint that appealing to me.

The main reason why an E92 is my favourite at the moment is because it has something I love in a car. All round ability.

Some people like the best possible handling. Others want the lowest 0-60. Some want comfort and toys.

I really like cars which can do it all - its what I like about my E39 and its what appeals about the E92. Find a decent road and it handles well. Put your foot down and it's really rather quick. Cruise up the Motorway and its comfortable, loaded with kit and returns 35mpg.

I've no idea why but I've always liked cars like that. An Elise handles better, a tuned Evo is faster, an S Class is more comfortable but... I want everything to be 'excellent' rather than some things to be mind bendingly awesome at a cost of other things.

Dont forget hes coughing this himself, theres no business write off or undeclared bonus it hurts when its directly out the pocket whoever you are.

I have priced up BMW Warranty for a sub 60,000 mile 335i at £500 a year (Beyond 60k BMW warranty is completely useless IMHO).

Bizarelly they wanted £900 for an identical age/mileage 530i LCI

What does it include, you'll have to pardon my ignorance on what warranties cover but it does seem wise given the complexity of these cars.
