I was originally thinking of simply asking "What could I do for charity to raise some money for a needy cause" but this idea has expanded while typing, into asking a wider audience what your favourite cause is and what can be done about it?
I'm sure we all sit in front of the PC in our free time as well as work time?
Could some of it be put to better use?
Perhaps we (OCUK Collective) could get involved in something as a group and raise funds for a selected group of needy people.
What that is I don't yet know.
Maybe throw your ideas down here, see if there is any interest..
Anything from cycling up Ben Nevis in a bunny suit in aid of the WWF
to throwing a Christmas dinner party for some local youth club..

Some of us are doing Movember, pretty easy one that, takes no real effort, very manly thing to do anyway, good excuse not to shave in the morning :D.... but it doesn't pull us together collectively.
I've recently got involved with some local good people (seems rare these days) once a month we go out for a meal together and put £5 in the pot for the charity, gets you out of the house, gets you involved with the community, you meet like minded people and gives you a good feeling that your are helping out a little.
Obviously something worthy would also be good PR for OCUK ;)

Clearly we are all spread far and wide around the country but I don't think that is too much of a barrier, after all, Motors have a regular meet (haven't been into any of the other sections to see what else goes on) go on spirited drives, go down the pub for a feast together, test the cars output on "rolling road days", but it's all to no avail other than self satisfaction..
Is there be a worthwhile thing we could do together..

So...
Ideas, stories and enthusiastic thinking welcome.

Why don't you actually do something hands-on like deliver meals on wheels, instead of giving money to a bunch of admin bureaucrats.

I was thinking of doing cooking some sauces, chutneys and the like and seeing if Spie would be so kind as to let me sell a few on here for Wiltshire air ambulance who came to my rescue the other week. Failing that at a market or something.

The local charity I mentioned that I have "Supperclub" with, is a hands on and meet the people at the sharp end type affair. There isn't, as such, a bunch of admin bureaucrats.
But I do know what you mean regarding the larger charities.
I guess you just have to bear the fact as the charity gets bigger, the paperwork mounts up and has to be paid for somehow.

Not wishing to dismiss a good idea here but..
Can of worms with regards to food standards. What if someone got ill.

Excuse the pun :D

I've gone along to a few MacMillan quiz nights which were good fun, they hire a church hall, run a quiz with donated prizes and supply some booze (you can also bring your own :D). £10 to join and raffles through out the evening, £5 to double your points in a round etc to raise more money.

On the topic of helping good causes, an easy thing to do is folding@home, using the power of your CPU or GPU to do research into protein folding, which can cause various diseases if it goes wrong, there is an OcUk team here.

There is also BOINC for other projects which use distributed computing for various other good causes.

Already do folding with the PS3, well until mother switches it off anyway as it "uses too much electric"

I give to Amnesty, but I despise those who give to charities supporting the ederly - the last thing we need is people living to a ripe old age right now. Working for the NHS, I can attest to how much of a drain they are. I'm an open-minded and tolerant individual, for the most part, but if there are two things I detest it's stupidity and the elderly.

Good man :), if you haven't already, put your team number as 10, then it helps the OcUk team move up the leaderboards as well ;)

But yeah I was thinking something like a quiz could be a good laugh, you could have rounds of questions based on the different forums in OcUk, motors, entertainment, sports, hardware etc.

My mate works for help the blind.

He says 'They put dogs on all the leaflets and NEVER the blind especially not the ones with funky eyes as donators can't stand thinking about the actual people, but love thinking about the cute dogs'

He's on about 52K a year, and laughs about spending 20 hours a week playing 'Hearts'.

:(

Im in talks to help a childrens charity with their call routing, that will take up a few hours a week of my time

Thats a charity I and about 10 others setup, we've got our 1st kennel and have a dog we're looking to be rehomed. When our fundraising events become more regular next year we will hopefully get another cuople of kennels.

The dog we have in at the moment is a female rottie, we got her on Saturday when she was due to be put to sleep on Monday. Sh'es a lovely friendly dog bt is a little scared of men, but thats something I and a couple of other blokes have been working on with her and she's starting to overcome her fear now :)

:EDIT: if anyone wants to know, thats our 2nd dog on the front page, a Huskey x Akita.

I pay extorinate amounts of income tax, and my spare time I work overtime, so I'm paying more extorinate income tax. So any time left over is for me.
