Facebook profile pictures v prospective employers

How would they even know its you?

I suspect you've been rejected for interview because there is something about you which doesnt fit what they want, not because you have pictures of you snowboarding on Facebook.

Possibly, but my point is that I know (if you had read my first post) that employers do search Facebook. It is not about my CV (or my picture), just whether having an FB profile picture could go against you with a prospective employer. My question is for the masses not just me. ;)

"He must like snowboarding" is the furthest conclusion they could logically jump to without making generalisations.

You'd be shocked at how some managers can extrapolate though... "hrm, lkes snowboarding, might get injured and take loads of time off sick..."

Seriously, I've worked for someone who moaned about people doing anything risky in their own time, despite it being none of his ******* business.

hmmmmm

If you are a employeer from the old guard you may come to the following incorrect conclusions.

1. The prospective employee has long hair
- He is 'new age'?(someone from the old guard called me this)
- He is to lazy
- possible drug user
- does not care about appearance(unsuitable for public facing role)
- Likes heavy metal music(see above)

2. Snowboarding
- The prospective employee is Michalangeo from 'The Turtles'.

Your appearance counts for a lot when going for a job. People are small minded.

I looked up an interviewer on Facebook and figured out she was a single mum of two. Bigged up my being a parent and made a big deal about the flexible working being a big draw. Got the job.

And I honestly can't believe you would fail to get jobs because you like snowboarding. Oh no! He likes exercise in the fresh air! What a disreputable so and so!

Exactly

Haha fair play, silly old people.

If I were to generalise from that photo, I might assume that the OP likes travelling (in order to snowboard) and so might wish to take extended periods of time off in order to do so.
Having said that, I wouldn't go looking up a prospective employee on Facebook as it's completely irrelevant to how well they might do their job, so the above generalisation wouldn't be an issue.

Sorry if it's been mentioned but in the privacy settings you can just set everything to private so all that can be seen by anyone not on your friendslist is your name.

To be honest I wouldn't employ you because of your ginger Leo Sayer hair.

Anyway, it's funny how some bosses look at stuff and make a decision.
In March 2008 I had an interview to work with Young Apprentices at the NHS and I knew another 49 qualified people had applied.
Because I'd failed 3 interviews, I went and got some advice from 3 places that gave mock interviews and all said 'Good interview but nothing really amazing about you'.
None of you on here who think they know me will believe that in real life I don't talk about my rock bands.
I worked with people for 27 years who had no idea what I got up to at the weekend because my Dad always told me to keep it quiet when I was younger.
Nobody in my new job knows that I play in a band but if they eventually find out I always ask them to keep it to themselves.
Back to the mock interview -
I told the guy that there is something I get up to that is maybe interesting and logged onto my Disturbin The Peace site.
He went ballistic asking why I don't mention it to prospective employers because it puts me in a whole new interesting light.
All 3 mock interviewees said exactly the same thing.
So at my next 3 interviews that were all in the same week I mentioned my music and able to show them on their computers in the office and I got all 3 jobs offered to me.
I took the Young Apprentices job and on my 3 month appraisal I was told they had chose me because I played in a band.
Obviously I would probably have failed immediately on other interviews.

My sister is a manageress of Morrisons and if a person mentions they play an instrument she gets them talking about that to find their real passion and usually takes them on.

I was told they had chose me because I played in a band.

I'm assuming part of the positive light would be because you need to be able to work/cooperate with other people in a band. It's the whole "team player" thing. :)

It is not my real hair. ;)

Also, my other problem is that as far as my research has gone, I am the ONLY person in the world with the same name. it is an odd mix between a Northern Finnish first name and a very English, but quite rare surname. If they search for me it will be only me they find.
