Another stupid car purchase

I guess we should do the Motors awards 2010 in December then!

Anyway if that lot can be fixed up, for just over £1k it's a steal.

award please!

Heh.

Janesy doubts the sheer awesomeness of my car just because it was (allegedly) puffing out a bit of smoke at the meet . Funny as the smoking wasn't actually that bad on the day, and the red Fiesta didn't spend a particularly long time behind me, neither do I remember anyone else mentioning it :o.

Either way, old turbocharged car in "It puffs a bit of smoke" shocker! ;)

Incredible buy for the money, especially if you have the skill to fix the issues yourself.

Surely this is screaming fix issues, quick service, add bundle of reciepts to existing history, write decent advert with good pictures and sell for profit.

I don't know too much about the values of these, but after that you've got to be looking at 2k surely?

I spent a good 17 miles with you in view on the M3 at a relatively steady cruise .. ;) There's also the diesel overtaking thing :p Bring on RR11 and a 200bhp dyno graph, if it's higher than that, your lunch is on me.

I do really like that colour, most I see about haven't had the paintwork looked after at all. I have a ropey ZS 110, I would get a 180 in perhaps 2 years time when insurance isn't so bad :D

My ZS:

Its a toss up between the chap with the 166 Alfa or that Xsara i think.

There have been some real bargains in the last 3 months or so, in the <£2500 car market the prices seem to have really died as people have lost their jobs or stuff.

Makes the argument to sell the diesel and get a 180 very compelling.

I paid £1800 for a 2003 diesel, but it's quite rare in that it's got pretty much every option on the list (strangely enough not fog lights though) so I'd probably get that back once it's on the road.

This proves OcUK does have quite a lot of pent up anger for diesels, I got slated for mine a year ago. :p

Also, I'd be fixing all the issues and preventing all common problems from occurring in the future, and keeping it.

If you find you have 'free play' at the top of the clutch pedal travel, I make a kit to eliminate this. Had it on my ZS and it drove me mad!

Oh come on, as if the options make ANY difference to the value of a car like that. What options does it have?

You'd be surprised, the ZS came with literally nothing, and people try and find one with things like electric windows (some came with front winders!) or the front splitter.

Especially with the diesels, as they're pretty rare.

My (crap) options are: Front and Rear electric windows (unusual to have rears, option only), AC and front splitter.

I've had a few good offers purely because of the all electric windows, and the AC. Base spec (literally a seat, and that's it) models go for a lot less than I was offered.

If you're a fanboy, you have the choice of getting a Rover 45 with quite a lot of toys and having the handling of a giant jelly, or getting a ZS which feels totally different, but you'll find more equipment in an empty garden shed with most models.

The hydraulic clutch is a weak point on these, and either the slave cylinder or bracket will have no doubt already broken!

..and this is why people shake their heads at Rovers. What you're listing should be base spec, not options!

I like Rovers, I think the MGZS is 'alright' but it only pulls it off by having the KV6 up front. A big heavy diesel lump will kill the 'fun' handling of the ZS

I find my electric windows, mirrors, heated rear window, half leather seats and AC (which needs a re-gas or whatever) ample, only thing I would like is cruise control but this only came with the diesel automatics, I believe.

Is there any fix available for the linkages in the plenum at all?. Seeing Dogbreaths post just reminded me of a customers MG ZT with that problem...they were hoping to get it sorted themselves but just in case it comes back...
:)

Just spotted this. There is a chap on one of the forums (sheddist on xpowerforums I think) who has managed to take a plenum apart and replace the worn out plastic linkage with a metal one he designed. However, the plenum is ultrasonically welded together and is extremely difficult to get apart without completely destroying it, and then you have the problem of sealing it all up again.

BBA-Reman used to recondition the plenums for about half the cost of a new one, though I don't know if they still offer this service.

Dunno if you saw my post jon.bda but if you fit a catch tank it practically fixes this.

A guy over on themgzs.co.uk has had his for 5ish years now and has a catch tank fitted, hes still on original plenum and vis valves.

I know a guy who can repair them though, he is on themgzs.co.uk - fixes them for £10 each :)
