Looking to change my 4870x2.

What's your budget?

Am I right in saying that your mobo supports both sli and xfire? If it does (and of course providing that you're willing to consider multi gpu again) then you could buy one 470 now and add another in a few weeks / months.

Like i said i dont fancy getting a single card that has less peformance than my 4870x2 use to give me. D11 is pointless too me. It eats up cards. Ideally you need 2 or 3 cards to get good fps with DX 11 on.

In which case I suspect either a 470 a 5870 or even a 6870 will give you what you are after. But going by your original question on which Nvidia card would give you that I stand by my original reply which was that a 470 will perform better than your existing card.

I want to go nvidia aswell. Kind of got annoyed with ati drivers even when my card was not playing up. I kind of want to add a cheap card for physix aswell.

Good advice, i bought my first 470 a few weeks ago, ordered another a few days ago due to the lower prices, adding another, even a second hand card down the line is a good idea, albeit though, ive been told that dual 470's will run pretty warm and use a lot of power, ill know better about this tomorrow.

^Enjoy your new graphics combo, setter. :) Be sure to post your benchies and general feelings; sli 470's...pretty hard to beat, great performance vs decent price.

I think the 470 would actually comfortably outperform the 4870x2 to be honest mate - and as an added advantage although the 470's do run hot and suck a fair bit of juice it should be nothing compared to the heat and power sucked up by your current card.

Just for info I just replaced a pair of 1gig 4870's in crossfire with a single 6870 card and am very happy with it.

2 X 1 gig 4870 is what i have :) this is good news for me if a single 6870 works that well  but i would still like to crossfire them one day.

could you Tell me what games you base this on ? I play COD's and Battlefield Bad Company 2 my preferable game.

I mainly only play wow nowdays but I did complete black ops yesterday (on wimp mode lol). I play at 1080p on a samsung syncmaster 2333 monitor and my choice of graphcs card was easy because my motherboard only supports crossfire and I wanted to replace my 4870's with a single card. I do still have the option of adding a second 6870 for crossfire later if I decide to get a bigger monitor though.

dmxdex2020, would be interested to see what your frame rate is like running a benchmark, I'm thinking ahead for when I need to upgrade my 4870x2 you see. I don't want to buy a nice new top end card if my cpu is more than a slight bottleneck. I have chosen the first that came in to my head : Stalker : Call of Pripyat.

I have used the following advanced options :

MSAA : off
SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion) mode : HDAO (High Definition Ambient Occlusion)
SSAO quality : Ultra
Dx10.1

If anyone that has the same gpu or two 4870's, or something roughly equivalent, I'd be interested to compare results.

I'll run the test once or twice more with different settings as well.

The next run through :
MSAA : off
SSAO mode : HBAO (Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion)
SSAO quality : High
Dx10.1

My card just seems to get bad mouse lag with high settings. And even though i have high fps it feels like its running low fps. Im thinking its buggy. I have had a lot driver issues recently. It would BSOD a lot then it settled down. One of my lights comes on solid from time to time. 470 with a future upgrade to another looks like a good bet.

Fair enough m8. If you get a 470 then let us know what you think! :) Not sure when I'll be upgrading, quite possibly early-ish next year. I find my card runs everything great - that is until (in some games) AA is applied.

So you dont get any issues that i mentioned? My card must be faulty. Had it for 2 years and its been nothing but issues.

No, I can't say I do. It seems quite likely that there must be something wrong with your card, you seem to have been plagued by lots of problems, which is a real shame; in most respects in my experience it has been one of the best cards I have owned. I must say I think you've been more than patient with it, time for a change before the vat goes up?

It cost me 300 quid lol and it was second hand though. Its the rare tri-fan edtion so its doesnt get hot whatsoever. Maybe thats why the guys got rid when i bought it. i could have bought a brand new one with the reference design. I wish i did now. I actually want to go Nvidia now anways so i can get it with physix and stuff. I know too a lot its pointless but i like it. Also curious has do crossfire 5770s stack up against a 470?

There we go, I know it's only a benchmark but I disabled / lowered SSAO etc (which I 'imagine' would be a real resource hog), turned up the in benchmark AA to x4 and voila, nose dive in fps (pic below). I did also try running with AA forced in CCC. The problem with that is due to the speed of the bench, I can't really see if it working properly or not. For what it's worth I got much higher fps with forced CCC.

As for Xfire 5770's v a 470, I'll gladly have a look after dinner. :) I expect that the minimums won't fair so well with xfire 5770's (but possibly higher maximums), but we'll see.
