which ones would you recommend to people who havnt played many RPG games?

old ones are welcome too, doesnt have to be all shiny and DX11, would prefer them to work on windows 7 though

you have hack and slash, rpg's and mmorpgs

i reccomend lord of the rings online seeing as its free, its also massive.

Good RPGs as actual RPGs: BG1+2 and Diablo II

Fun RPGs that are great games but not as RPG as others: Dragon Age Mass Effect 1+2 and Dungeon Siege 2.

RPG that is more like an Action Adventure: Fable

Obviously this is my personal opinion and not at all based on facts

The Witcher and KotoR1+2. Both great games and are very accessible for a new person to RPGs with regards to stats etc. diving in at the deepest end and being put off for good could happen with the overly complicated ones.

Edit: Also agree with the ss2 + Deus Ex vote, especially if you already life fps style games.

Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines (patched of course)

it's one of the few set in the modern era.

it is one of the few games where there are genuine changes depending on what choices you make

it is great an a FPS AND sneak em up too.

God I wish they'd make a sequel.

cheers for the replies, i have enjoyed kotor in the past and im tempted to order the witcher for the xmas break.
ive always seen baldurs gate mentioned in rpg theads and i have to give it a go sometime does it work ok with windows 7? :)

Baldur's Gate (#1) was my first RPG. I have played a lot since, and I still think BG1 is possibly one of the best introductions to RPG gaming you could wish for.

In no particular order:

Mass Effect 2
Vampire Bloodlines (patched up)
Deus Ex
Fallout 2
Baldurs Gate 2
KOTOR
System Shock 2
The Witcher
Fallout New Vegas

They have to be my favourites anyway :)

A good mix of new and old, deep RPG / action RPG etc... depends what you like, you might find going straight into something like BG2 or Fallout 2 having not played many RPGs a little off-putting.

I wouldn't recommend starting with BG2 either, although it pains me to see people recommending players skip BG1 in every RPG thread.

For a start, BG2 has a story that is a continuation of BG1.
Secondly, it drops you in as mid-level characters with mid-level spells and abilities, which can be very daunting to anyone not broken into D&D gaming.
Third, BG1 is absolutely class! Why skip it?
