My own head
A month of so ago I had an engineer out to repair net due to low power levels at peak times, he "fixed" the issue and all seemed well, but no the issue is back with a vengence and it's not the power levels.

The guys say there is nothing wrong with the line, as I was talking to him on the phone with a ping of 1000 (LOL) and a speed of 7-16Mb/s (I live down the road from exchange).

He has told me that my line has been put under surveillance so that they can try find out what the hell is going on, almost lost my nut on the phone when the original guy said "go into IE and clear your cookies".

Any other experiences? Thinking of moving now, they were brilliant for years but last few months have been hell.

Like a graph plot at 3 hour intervals of U/D Power / SNR for a 7 day period...? :)

Not sure why I added the LOL in there, maybe its the fact I've been trying to resolve this issue for a month and now feel like a child.

Will give the forums a shot.

Indeed. The more info you put out there the more help you will get.

Most of the recent problems on Virgin stem from:

- rolling out the increased upload speed
- changes to the traffic management system

If it's a gaming issue then it's probably the traffic management. If it's a general usage issue it's more likely to be UBR congestion or a broken modem. It's hard to generalise but the more you look into your own issue the more you may be able to work out.

I've been having the same problems for about 6 weeks now.

0.5Mb/s down, 0.01Mb/s up, pings of several thousand milliseconds, packet loss of over 50%. No one at Virgin Media cares at all.

They have lied to me on every single occasion.

  • 1st time I phoned up, he said there was a known fault that will be fixed in 7 days.

  • 2nd time, he said there was never a problem. And that he will send a "booster signal" to my modem which will magically fix everything

  • I then posted on the forums. An admin replied by telling me that my power level was too high and an engineer will be sent to fix this. I told him I can fix the power levels myself, so could he send the engineer to fix the problem at Virgin's end first. I then received a telling off for having dupe accounts on the same IP (my brother also had an account). But still no help whatsoever for the actual problem at hand.

  • 3rd time I rang, he said he ran a ping test to my modem and found out that it was "broken", and booked an engineer against my wishes.

  • When the engineer came he checked everything and said there's nothing wrong with the modem, and I had to apologise and explain how it was the Indian call centre's fault for wasting his time.

My only option was to upgrade from 20Mb to 50Mb, which they will be installing tomorrow. If it isn't fixed with 50Mb, I'll be leaving them tomorrow and going back to BE.

I think I am having similar issues with VM.
I am on their 20 meg XL package, have been for years, but recently I have had to reboot the modem and the router as I have interent freezes, just plain surfing, nothing heavy.
I have also had several disconnection errors playing COD BO...but lots of people have that too:rolleyes:

I thought it might be my router but is seems internittant possibly traffic shaping?

Anyone know where I can run a reliable test for ping and help diagnose the problem?

im on virgin media 20 meg, and of late i can say i have a few problems regarding browsing, noticed on overclockers site and forums,

when i click on my favourites to open up overclockers its hit and miss to wether it opens up, sometimes get this page cannot be displayed , where if i keep trying it eventualy loads, same with overclockers forums.....

tried different browsers, and was thinking of formatting my hard disk to rule out some bug......

how do you do a ping test?

HMMM

Just found this post - http://community.virginmedia.com/t5...r-Problem-with-internet-Then-read/td-p/145226

I have the EXACT modem that guy describes as the "old" one, and his issue sounds frightingly familiar to mine, then again I don't see how my modem could cause packet loss multiple hops down the line, would be more of a source issue no?

Do I hassle them for a new modem in the post... *ponders*

Oh... and for a laugh I will quote what one of the guys in india said today on the phone that ticked me right off

We do not care about upload speed sir, upload does not matter to us as most people do not use it.

I care about upload speed... especially when I'm getting 0.2 when im actually meant to get 0.7 and due for a speed upgrade to 2.0... BUT HEY I'm just a customer, what do I know sitting in my chair in the country where my service resides.

Most people do though (ambit 250 series). His was probably faulty or his router was shafted. The new one is a netgear home hub. Which also has it's own set of issues.

thanks for that , just done a ping test and everything seems fine, ill try again later when the network gets busier, even on spped test and ping test my connection seems fine....99% of websites are fine but ocaasionly, i get page cannot be displayed, even on overclockers.......

i lost a good buy on ebay through leaving it till the last 20 seconds to bid, 3 gig of corsair dominator sold for £31, internet just hung when i clicked bid....

this also happens on another computer connected to the router, my missus reads these vampire stories online and last night she couldnt get on the site even though the site had no problems, ive reset the router , and it gets turned off every night so gets a reboot when ever we go to bed......

looks like ill format mine the weekend to see if things improve.....
