Live Messenger 2011

Im tempted to go to Pidgin..i man, why cant I change my name to anything I want? I don't want to "share links" i just want to be shown as my firstname not my whole name. Why do my friends need to see my second name on there?

blah!

I'm surprised by the responses here, I'm getting on well with the new version.
Granted the default settings aren't good - that initial window was a shock.
But it's all sorted with "a patch", all good in the hood.

I'll be going back to 2009 version it works so much better than 2011 which disconnects and reconnects, no nicknames!!

You can rename your contacts with nicknames though, and you *can* give yourself one, just rename yourself in your Live! profile (hence why I'm just called "el").

I couldn't care less what my name is on my Live! profile, as I'll never actually use it for anything other than setting my name for Messenger.

If you want to give yourself no second name then open character mapper and tick advanced view, then with font Arial selected search for "narrow". Should only be one result which is a blank space. Then you can copy that into the second name field when you edit your name.

Doesn't that include all their silverlight and photo gallery stuff too?

Exactly! If I wanted Windows Live Essentials, i'd have searched for and downloaded them. Silverlight too.

At the end of the day, there was no need to remove the nickname function anyway. It's not that you can get around it, it's a case of wondering why you should have to.

Yup, I agree. That is why I am sticking with WLM 2009 until either Microsoft fix it or A-patch can change it. Also the "sharing" files instead of sending. I don't want to "share" I just want to send. Why can't there be an option to choose between sharing and sending?

Nickname and sending files is keeping me from using WLM 2011 at the moment.

I have been using it for a while now and it isn't so bad. The name problem you can get round with the blank space as your second name. Sending files is OK if you press alt then use the action menu to send a file(s), instead of drag and drop. YouTube links are annoying as now it opens another stupid "view together" window. This is just amazingly silly as I have seen the video already, which is why I am sending a link so my friend can view it, not watch it again myself. I guess it does this for other website URLs too. Hopefully these can be fixed with Apatch.

On the plus side links work again (though of course they were disabled in WLM 2009 only to make you upgrade :), and not because of a "worm"). Also seems to only need a single click on a link to open it in Firefox instead of at least 2 clicks as in 2009.

Been using Digsby since I saw it mentioned in this thread. It doesn't have anywhere near the amount of features it should have but its working out for me so far since I'm prolly considered a "light" msn user now.

IOW you can at least use it to chat without first having to disable the bundled ice cream maker, kitchen sink and integrated carnival waltzer machine before being able to use it.

Ahhh ****. After bugging me with reminders for the last few months they've finally decided to force people to use 2011 on "security" grounds. Apparently the new one has already been downloaded and is waiting to install.. I don't remember giving permission for that, I specifically blocked it from Windows Update. Sneaky ****s.

Is there a workaround to keep 2009 (v14) alive?

edit: Sorted. If anyone wants to keep 2009 run it as Server 2003 (SP1) Compatibility mode.
