I assumed he meant when people find out who bought their gift.

Some are done that way, some are done this. I think the majority of people like to either know who got them, or tell the person they bought the gift.

Not knowing who gave you a gift is fine, however not knowing who you are buying FOR is daft as you wouldn't know the gender or where to send it
