New Reduced Geforce GTX 460 Prices

nice post m8y :)

well i am holding off as my 275GTX is still holding its own :D

i shall sit on the line and wait......

I always assumed there would be duty and VAT on something like a graphics card but it looks like there is no need if it's within your total allowance (£390).

Depending on what tariff code they get imported under there is potentially no duty to pay anyway (talking from a business perspective here).

The tariff code I have found which is the closest match to a GPU would be 8542 31 90 00 - 'Processors and controllers, whether or not combined with memories, converters, logic circuits, amplifiers, clock and timing circuits, or other circuits ' The duty rate is 0% on this tariff code regardless if the source country is eligible for preference or not.

Only thing I have to say is what's $120 in the US it's £110 here which is funny considering our £ is worth much more. And don't get me started on VAT, some states in the US don't have sales tax and the average is %5 across all states with California being the highest at %8.25. LOL 8% Oh, and we'll be up to %20 soon.

Basic economics though surely?

Supply/Demand. At dfferent prices your demand will change. Sure they could lower the price and shift more units, but they need to find a balance.

If you lower the price you may sell more but your profit will be reduced, if you sell enough you may make more money over all but you may also have to supply more stock to do so.

Also future sales will be impacted as you will have less potential buyers for your stock as you're selling more units to the masses.

If the price of something is too high then the volume of buyers will be low, and the price must come down until the level of demand and the profit per unit is at a sweet spot.

Remember the costs per unit are also a static value so at some point, reducing the price below a certain figure can result in a loss for every unit sold.

I paid £189.99 for my Giga 1GB. I know prices drop over time and I probably paid a brand new product premium but £50 in 6 months is kinda depressing.

bought a card yesterday hours before they put the deal on. Glad OCUK gave me the deal price :D dont know any other retailer that will do that.

aye i guess its what we get for buying as soon as they came out though, was a good card at the time and it still runs pretty much everything maxed out anyway with loads of AA

The correct pricing for the GTX 460s are as follows

  • £120 for 768MB inc reference cooler
  • £125 for 768MB inc enhanced cooler
  • £125 for 768MB inc Overclock
  • £130 for 768MB inc enhanced cooler + Overclock
  • £140 for 1024MB inc reference cooler
  • £145 for 1024MB inc enhanced cooler
  • £145 for 1024MB inc Overclock
  • £150 for 1024MB inc enhanced cooler + Overclock
These prices are approximately accurate within £5.00 . . . there should not be more than £20-£25 difference between a like-for-like 768MB unit and a 1024MB unit . . .

Someone has been "quietly" applying a little bit of a "stealth" tax on the 1024MB models . . . in the space of a few weeks we seem to have gone from six 1024MB models falling in the sub £150 "sweetspot" to just one?

Let us not forget just how good the £120 768MB GTX 460 is @ 1920x1200 . . . its very hard to "justify" more than an extra £20-£25 extra spend on the 1024MB models . . . there really shouldn't be that many 1024MB units priced above £150 as its just a rip-off . . . . extra money is being taken from the punters in an effort to increase the business profits . . . naughty! :D

I was looking into these cards recently and ended up deciding between the two.
If the 768MB version was £125 and the 1024MB version was £150, then for Nvidia to justify the 20% (I know you like percentages/price comparissons BigW :D ) price hike, the 1024MB would need to outscore the 768MB version by at least 20% IMO.
According to the graphs above it does not and only two of the 11 tests come close - STALKER and Crysis.
Overall it ends up being £25 for 256MB, which I'm sure nobody would go out and buy these days.
So Wayne does have a good point.

Yes, except for the fact that the card has 50% more ROP units as well :) It does overclock better too.

ROPs, GLOPs or CHOPs or whatever the extra performance works out on average at approx 4FPS . . .

Four Frames Per Second . . . . how much is that worth exactly? :D

My worry would be between the 1gb and 768 at 1920 res, games would struggle with Vram and stutter when Vram has exceeded and when AA is enabled etc.

There are games now that use more than 768mb, so a 1GB card for a few quid cheaper would be why i would buy a 1GB over the 768mb 460 everytime.

Wayne its all very well posting graphs which btw you clearly love doing, but those graphs do not tell you about the performance issues ie.stuttering, slowdowns etc when 768 vram is exceeded with games that use more than 768mb at a 1920 screen res. Maybe my comments are wrong i dont know?

It wont be long till 768mb cards will be no more imo

Yep, a few games im currently playing go over 700mb, (800 mb+) of memory usage, BC2, MOH being examples.

Looks like you must have been suckered by advertising or something because if you look at the facts and see the performance difference between the two cards and STILL make a comment like "except for the fact that the card has 50% more ROP units as well" then it doesnt say much does it, especially if it has 50% more ROP units and can only muster up 5-15% more fps. :)
