PC in my sig, no matter what I press I can't get into BIOS. The backlighting on the keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II - a USB keyboard) doesn't come on until after the BIOS stage so I suspect that's the problem.

Short of trying to borrow a PS-2 keyboard from somewhere is there anything else I can try?

not sure if this will work,

Try unplugging your harddrive, so the pc doesnt "boot" fully and just stops on the bios hardware detection screen complaining about a lack of bootable drive, then see if your keyboard comes alive and try getting into the bios then?

or.

disconnect pc from the mains, pull the battery out, so the bios resets to defaults, then it will stop on the bios screen asking you to set up the defaults? but again your keyboard needs to work otherwise you wont even have a bootable pc.

+1

I've seen a few people with this problem and they usually end up buying a ps/2 keyboard and all's well. ;)

As long as legacy USB is enabled in the BIOS then a USB keyboard will work. However that doesn't get round the problem of not being able to enabled it....

This is why I have a spare PS/2 one in the cupboard.

Would a USB female to PS2 female adapter do the same job?

Scratch that. Argos do a cheap and cheerful PS/2 keyboard for the same price as an adapter. Will get it tomorrow and have a go.

Got myself a PS2 keyboard, went into the BIOS and legacy USB is shown as enabled. So how come it's not working then? Is there a specific USB port the keyboard needs to be plugged into or something?

The keyboard needs to be enabled before the 'press DEL to enter setup' disappears. Perhaps if you disable quick boot allowing a memory check to occur it will allow enough time.
Otherwise just keep the PS2 keyboard for when you want to enter the bios.

funnily enough my mobo requires that i have legacy USB support DISABLED in order to get, er, legacy USB devices to work.

stupid? yes! but it works :)

If it's stupid but works, it ain't stupid.

Alas it didn't work for me. Will just keep the PS2 keyboard spare - would have been nice not to have to but never mind.
