Are there any crimes that deserve death?

Dear oh dear.

Some of you have no idea what justice is. "Lock them up and throw away the key"; "let them rot"; "kill them" - those things are not even about justice at all.

Those things would simply make you feel better about the crime that was committed.

This is why asking this question to the general public is a pretty bad thing to do. Most people let their emotions rule over their judgement. Especially when it comes to something like pedophilia.

What is your version of justice then ?

Should someone who rapes and kills for gratification be issued with a fixed penalty or perhaps get six months and / or fine ?

I am not huge advocate of the death penalty but I do ask that the judiciary make the punishment fit the crime and if that means that said rapist and killer is locked away for the rest of their natural life then so be it, throwing away the key being a quite acceptable phrase.

2nd chance prehaps? It's all relative, if someone has committed the same horric crime twice, say a person raped and murdered a child for the second time and the evidence was 100% conclusive then yes. Chop their head off, shoot them, whatever...they don't deserve to be on this planet.

I don't know if i conveyed my thoughts very well there but you get the jist.

Is it just me or are Britains prison's not a deterant? Xbox, PS3, TV's? surely this is the point of prison, to bore the person to death so they appreciate the small luxury's of the outside world. It's different for people brought up in tough situations obviously.

A life behind bars (and I mean life) WITHOUT all the luxurys these pedos and murderers are currently getting, making a mockery of our already turd justice system.

I never thought about it like this but when you're playing online say XBL or PSN for example you could be playing with one of them so to speak.

A second chance for crimes such as murder and rape?

Some crimes warrant a whole life sentence and the example I gave, in my humble opinion, is one of them.

Someone who stabs someone else to death in a red mist moment but who is of previous good character should be given a second chance as should most people who commit certain crimes assusming they are of previous good character and the safety of the public is not affected.

A mate of mine is an HMP officer and on hearing some of the stories he has told me, I got the impression that prison is not the cushy hotel that some believe it to be, certainly not cat A and B establishments anyway.

Does anyone know what actually happens in UK prisons, as opposed to reading the OMG 5 STAR HOTEL PRISON! stories in the media?

I've just been reading an apology from one paper regarding their story about PS3s being taken away from prisoners in a jail. In fact, they had never been allowed. It turned out that nobody bothered checking because their reporters were obviously reading the same OMG 5 STAR HOTEL PRISON! stories.

So...does anyone actually know the policy? And by "know" I mean "has first hand direct knowledge of the actual policy", not "has read a lot of OMG 5 STAR HOTEL PRISON! stories".

Not cushy because of the type of prisoners in category A and B prisons or because of a strict regime.

Yup. Someone in the family was quite senior in the Northern Ireland prison service. Got out a few years back to change careers. Also know someone who'll be out next year after serving a murder sentence.

All the nonsense about TVs and Playstations is just that. Nonsense. Sure, there are rewards for good behaviour, you might get a radio or something. Maybe a TV they can rent from money they've earned inside. But that's about it. They're certainly not allowed anything that can be connected to the internet as far as I'm aware. And people who claim prison is easy have either never been, or never done a long sentence, or done a long sentence on remand and never been in amongst the main population and certainly not on a lifer unit.

Well that's what i mean, is it death straight away or prison for like 20 years and then death if they do it again.

Really? What about a schizophrenic though?

Yeah it's the media then.

I've been to HMP Grendon, which is actually very different to most Prisons if you read about how they treat Prisoners. But during my time there I never saw a PS3, Xbox, Big Screen TV or the usual stuff you hear so called "Experts" say.

They do get PC's in the Library, but thats to help them with their work if they are taking any educational programs. Even still they are extremely limited in terms of how long they are allowed to use them, and are constantly monitored throughout usage.

I've been in a few Inmates Cells and all it generally is, is a bed, a desk a few books and maybe a poster and thats it. Not sure were everyone gets these ideas that they are 5 Star Hotels from? Inmates in most Prisons are locked up 23 hours a day in a Cell as it is, Grendon is slightly different and they get 7-8 hours out but thats because of the type of treatment program they use on Offenders.

I study Criminology at BCU, doing an MA so I know a fair amount of Prison Policy, Conditions and so forth. Infact I'm going back to HMP Grendon in December, which I'm quiet looking forward to. :)
