Hello this is my first post on Overclockers UK, i am planning on purchasing several parts for my new gaming rig within the next week.

Here are the components i am planning on buying:
Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield)
OCZ Gold 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit
Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard

these components will couple with my ATI 5870(which is severely bottlenecked by my current rig) and my 700W OCZ modular PSU

so my question is, will these parts work well together, and if you have any recommendations they will be appreciated.

(on a further note i am buying an NZXT phantom case and two 1TB samsung spinpoint harddrives)

As long as you are happy with your components, there is nothing wrong with this setup. All parts will work together, no problem there.

I am sure other people will come up with alternatives for your build, but if this is what your heart is set on, your heart has chosen well.

thanks for your replies guys, and yea my heart is pretty set on these parts, any slightly cheaper alternatives would be a plus but money isnt really an issue at the moment, but might as well save where i can right?

Personally I would rather go with the Patriot RAM if you really want 12 Gigs using three sticks. I assume you want 12GB for some reason while still being able to overclock freely? Otherwise you could easily go with 6x2GB? If gaming is your main concern, I wonder a little bit why you want 12GB RAM instead of 6GB? As I do not see many good reasons for this, but that is something you know more about than me.

Additionally, if my reasoning is correct, you will also need an after market cooler.

Personally I would go with the Prolimatech, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-005-PL&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395 if you want air cooling.

For water, a true and tested choice would be the Corsair; H50 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-002-CS

Either way, it looks like you are on the way to acquiring a beast of a computer. Enjoy!

cheers porcelina, the 12 gbs is really for something that would last a good while, and 3 sticks instead of 6? well id rather keep some space free for safekeeping, as for cooling the NZXT phantom case comes standard with 4-5 120mm+ fans, i hopes this would be enough. what do you think?

It should be adequate. Means you cannot overclock though, not that that is necessarily a concern at all.

However, if it were me, I would definitely spend twenty pounds on a solid yet lightweight after market cooler to look after my new i7. I really do not care for Intel's basic ones and a cheap but reliable one would give both peace of mind and quite possibly a better and longer life span for you CPU.

okay, might consider that H50 then, an extra £60 isnt a lot, quick question tho, being as my ATI 5870 has been bottlenecked since february by a 2 ghz dual core, would it have any affect on the overall performance of my 5870?

I can second what has already been mentioned. You are crazy if you don't invest in an aftermarket cooler for your processor. Like it's been mentioned, the stock intel coolers are garbage, they won't keep your cpu that cool to begin with and when you start doing anything intensive, which I presume you will be with a system like that the fan will start to go crazy as the cpu heats up. Like it's also been mentioned you wont be able to overclock with the stock cooler, which is pretty silly in my opinion anyway, as there is so much potential being wasted, after all this is www.overclockers.co.uk

The OCZ golds aren't that good either as has been mentioned, If you have no particular reason for wanting or needing 12GB other than the fact some people like quantity over quality. I would stick with a quality 6GB trio, but of course that's entirely upto yourself.

But for the sake of 30-50 quid, get yourself a decent cpu cooler, if not the H50, go for something a little cheaper... there's loads to choose from and all are better than intels stock cooler.

When you come to building up your baby, make sure you take some pics and let us see it. Nice choice on the board and cpu :)

P.S of course these are only my views, and don't represent the views of anyone else, please feel free to do what you will with my opinions.

Happy Building :)

The h50 is a good cooler and works well or you might like to try the megahalems cooler if your priority is quality and money is not a major issue. If your doing any rendering then 12gb would be fine otherwise i would stick with 6gb.

As you're gaming, personally I'd recommend a massive spec overhaul.

Get the i5, this motherboard, 2x2gigs of Corsair XMS3 RAM, and a second (possibly even a third as well) 5870 for Crossfire.

Cheaper and miles better for gaming. Don't bother with an i7 or 12 gigs of RAM for gaming, it's a massive waste of money right now.

Also, I'd have to disagree that i5 coolers are no good- if you're overheating on stock speeds, you need a better case- but if you're overclocking, £30-£40 on a cooler is a good idea. The H50 is good n all but it's not as good for the money as an air cooler.

+1 to all of this. If gaming is the primary use, then the spec in the OP isn't the best use of the money.

Also, if you are in a position to wait - the new Intel "Sandy Bridge" CPUs and motherboards are coming out in little over a months time. These are expected to put even the i7 950 in its place (in terms of raw CPU performance).

okay, i think im gnna have to buy a cooler then, in regards to the cheaper gaming alternative you put here, what im really trying to build is something that will last 3-4 years without any major upgrades, i think for now ill stick with the i7 950 and mobo but if anyone can recommend some good 1600Mhz tri channel ram (at least 6 gbs) that would be nice.

sorry for double posting, just had a quick look around and throught maybe this would be a better alternative for RAM-
Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit

let me know your thoughts :)
