There is a phenomenon that when the moon is lower in the sky closer to the horizon, it creates a illusion that it is larger because of you being able to judge its size based on the perspective of things.
There is a name for this, but I don't know it.
I know im not making this up because I saw the moon close to the horizon before and it looked x2 its sized and I asked this very same question.
I haven't read many replies in this thread, Im betting this has been said a million times already.

It looked huge tonight, but im viewing it in a different part of the world to where im used to seeing it, so i don't know if thats made a difference.

The moon down here in SE (Eastbourne) Lastnight at 6:45pm(Wednesday) was odd. It was big and very low and was very orange but looked awesome :D

Why hello there! I looked at it last night too when out walking near the seafront...:) think it was gibbous phase

I once asked my physics teacher at college, why does the moon appear larger at the horizon and small overhead? He wasn't sure either (something to do with perspective). I thought it was due to the curvature of the Earth?...anyway I noticed this years ago when I did some astronomy.

I've seen it once so low in the sky over the Channel that the air pollution / particulates made it look like Mars (almost blood red) on the horizon.

ah you met the wife then.
:p

Speaking of the moon.. well not quite, I'm always intrigued by a large white looking star to the east in the morning and South in evening. I'm not sure if it's just a satellite, Sky most likely since they own everything.
