Car insuance? - Why so expensive?

The recent increase from the large dry goods manufacturer I mentioned averages at 8% across it's products.

Dry goods are not a massive perecentage of your average repair but paint and parts also contribute. All I'm saying is that there is a bigger picture. No one ever sees any further than the price on the bottom of their insurance quote.

So in summary we are just being shafted by insurance companies like i said in my first reply :p

are costs in the body shop industry rising significantly above inflation? I highly doubt the amount of costs being "passed on" is any near equal to the current rise in insurance costs.

most insurance companies are not in a profit.every pound of premium they take, most companies are paying out more than £1, there are only a handful of companies that are actually makeing profit (including marketing etc which companies like directline pay milllions out on) so to see any decrease in your premium your lucky as most people will see an increase

But why are the surprised people surprised, every other bill that falls in your letter box goes up year in year out, why does this one upset you :)

My insurance is going to be extortionate, I'm 28, 6 years driving without a claim but my no claims have expired due to driving as a named driver for 3 years :(

An insurance thread? Where is Scot212?

Insurers arn't ripping you off that badly, look up any published combined ratio figures; they are taking in pretty much what they are paying out, and making the vast majority of their profit on investment.

I always find myself switching and swapping companies, it's just the way it is. Some of your new quotes are less than what you paid this year, so you're not doing too bad.

I think a large part of this perceived (and renewal) increase is comparision sites. In the last 2 years they've become simply terrible. The prices they have for individual insurers are rarely the best price they'll offer. Even online quotes rarely match quotes over the phone.
And remember different companies cater to different markets, despite being sister companies when my renewal went up with admiral this year I managed to move to elephant, on a reasonable discount, and vastly improved terms etc. Only explanation I could get was that they target slightly different markets. Both were able to do better over the phone than online, and Admiral did better over the phone than my renewal had been for.

That was always going to be the case mate - only one insurance company would touch me last year. Why? Because I had not been insured with a car anywhere near that power before.

Its a bit silly as you'll never be able to unless an insurer gives you a chance once.

I'm not talking about silly £5k premiums here, I'm saying they refused to insure me at all. All but one. And thats with the same status as before 26, 7 yrs no claims, no accidents, no convictions, no points.

This year was always going to be better.

Pretty much every insurer my GF has been speaking to lately said theres almost a 17% increase for everyone, regardless of no claims, because the companies need to reclaim money lost due to the huge number of accidents in last winters bad weather.

Probably just an excuse to put it up though. :p
