Ok so current situation, no dumb comments pls :p

-GCSE's all good from A* to C's, 9 in total.
-A-levels not so good, Computing A2: D Technology: Product Design: C and an -AS Unendorsed: D
- Worked in newsagents whilst in Sixth Form, had a period of self employment, did some temp bench work and now hold a job providing support/testing for Zotac products.

I'm coming up to the grand old age of 20 :p but I'm starting to think should I have gone to Uni or maybe should I still go? I would like to make a decision now before I get any older :p But I was thinking of sticking with this job until the end of Summer then starting Uni in Sept 11, what do you guys think I don't want to regret not going.

Cheers.

Open university would be a decent bet I'd imagine.
Failing that, night classes to try and get some higher grades at A2 then apply to a "standard" uni.

So there would be no way to get into Uni with my current grades? I would be aiming for my local in Reading.

Do some courses with the open university perhaps and then see if you can either gain entry to a full time course or even transfer credits and do your 2nd/3rd year at a full time uni.

Perhaps try and cover 60 credits this coming year and 60 next then see if you can go straight into a 2nd year of a full time course.

Decide soon though as registration for courses closes in early Dec

I would recommend a foundation degree which will get you the entry requirements for most places with a relevant course. Have a look at your local higher education colleges/ poly uni's should be able to assist you in this.

Depending on course and how over subscribed a uni is then call them up as you may have a chance!

This is what I did and I'd also recommend doing it also. Started just before I turned 25 as well so your definitely not too old just yet :P

There is no point going to uni without first understanding what you want to do.

1. Find out what you want to study, what you have a passion for.

2. Ask yourself why you want a degree.

Advice about the reasons behind what you want to do is important especially now fees are increasing. You really must want to learn more about the subject you are planning to do. Then you have to have a goal, why are you doing a degree.

This gives you the two key things of desire and drive. If you do not have a good reason or are just thinking you want to go to uni, then avoid going. It is not all about drinking and little work (course depending :P)

6-7 Years ago, for my application (Computer Systems Engineering), was given an offer of E in either maths, computing or physics (most of my a levels were C's with an obligatory foreign language A* as it was my native :p Now in my 4th year of working in the industry).

PS. Point was that their original offer was very low.

Don't know if they tightened up since then, but don't see any problems with your grades per say, if you pick the right course for you and avoid stuck up universities with crap programmes, I see no reason why you can't go. Best would be to have an interview with the programme leader, and show him you are very keen, that counts for far more then your grades. Unless he is a stuck up ****.

I am twenty and am in my first year, reading politics. I did a (worthless) BTEC National Diploma in music at college, and in all fairness I did get D/D/D (as in distinction), but managed to get on a politics degree. My advice would be to lower your sights as far as universities are concerned and look at some with lower entry tariffs. Ring them up, and ask them what the likelihood is of them accepting you onto a degree with those grades.

Regarding whether it's the right thing to do or not, let me put it this way. I'm your age, started a new course in my second year of college and took a year out to try and make sure I was certain what I wanted to do. I have started my degree, thinking I was certain, and have realised that I'm not. The thing is, unless you're part of a very small minority, you will have no idea whether it's the right thing to do unless you do it (which is a real, real pain). But certainly don't rush into it and do a degree for the sake of it.

Would say its a bad advice to look at what university to go to, who cares? I went to UWE, its an ex poly or something crap like that, who cares? It has just as many idiots who get drunk on useless degrees as oxbridge. Instead look at the programme any uni offers and then arrange a meeting with the programme leader. Show him you are keen on the course, and can do it, then your actual grades don't matter. They should give you an offer to get in. As far as I can see, the whole ucas point crap is... well crap :o.

Cannot agree more with this. Especially after the new fees malarky, last thing you want to do is flip fries at the end of it. (though you won't be paying back the student loan then anyway :p)
