Are these any good? My brothers car just died and we couldnt manage to jump start it with my car.

Is there any decent battery charging / jump starting packs i can get online just incase my battery goes now the cold weather is coming or are they not worth the money?:confused:
 
surely you need to keep those things charged too.... after all they are just a battery, and batteries loose charge over time?
 
I'd just get a new good quality battery if yours is failing, or you're afraid it will. The one in my van appears to be the original with a 2005 date stamp and shows no signs of weakness yet.
 
I have to say if your car couldn't jump start it then I highly doubt a starting pack will be able to. Tried one on my Clio once and it just flattened the thing!

Agreed, if your car will not start from being jumped off another car, it isn't going to start off a jump pack either. A generic 063 battery is about £35 these days, find out if your car will take one and buy it.
 
If it won't jump from a running car a pack will have no chance in hell. We have a decent one here but that'll still only jump the mini a couple of times before it's out. It just about started the Jeep when fully charged.
 
I think they are pretty pointless. We got one and it takes ages just for a full charge but then only holds that charge for about a day, then you have had it. And if you can't jump start it with another car then the battery has probably died completely. Go get a nice new one. :)

what car is it?

cos if its something like a mpv or diesel it will need a lot of amps......

i us a booster pack all the time but if it needs a bit more of a kick i add jump leads as well as a booster pack

I think they're pretty handy, mine has a little compressor for pumping tyres and also has a torch etc and I'm pretty sure it holds charge for much longer than a day. :)

oddly not completely true, when I had my vitesse the battery had gone on that, we had leads and couldnt jump start it at all despite making decent connetions etc, but borrowed a £100 jump pack and it started straight away no problems

whilst I agree its worth having a decent battery... these jump packs hold their charge for a day.. ? wtf are you on buddy :P if you had one that helds its charge for a day id be taking it back, undisturbed they will hold fine for around a month. provided you top it up every month the battery will stay healthy and you wont have an issue

How heavy are car batteries? Mines gone flat due to cold and age. Was thinking of walking along to the local motor factor and picking one up.

Pretty heavy for what it is. But manageable, best to take it in a plastic container or something so you leak acid everywhere. :)

had mine since 2003 and it holds its charge just fine
i can check it after months and its still in the green
it has got me out of trouble lots of times over the years

one thing to think about is you have to be careful with jump starting off another car as it can fry the ECU on some cars, so a jump pack is a good idea
