I have not made the full jump yet but a friend told me a brush will make a difference anyway. Pleased to say it does, even with a Sensor Excel.

same here, i recently got a men-u brush from boots for 3 quid. i think its boar hair so its a little stiffer than badger. but it was still a bargain. came with a stand too!

a brush with blue ingram cream = one awesome shave.

the 34C HD is an awesome piece of kit. seriously. i have one and i havent looked back. DE shaving is so much cheaper, easier and you get more enjoyment out of it.

get one. and get a good cream like ingram green (if you dont have a brush)

DE sorry?

Will I experience more irritation from using a razor compared to an electric shaver?

Please recommend a few creams mate :) My skin isn't great so please one suggest one that is good for sensitive skin.

DE=double edged razor

You should experience less if your technique is okay.

There are many creams mentioned in the thread already. Geo F Trumper and Pro Raso are my personal "must have's" but there are plenty of other options. Read the thread, dude :)

well... DE means doubles edged. so there is two edges to the blade. (like the merkur you looked at, the 34C HD)

they cause less irritation because they slice the hair, rather than tug it out your face, then cut it like the newer gilette/wilkinsonsowrd's and electric shavers do. (apparently)

a cream i recommend for sensitive skin is probably the proraso stuff

http://www.shaving-shack.com/proraso-ultra-sensitive-shaving-cream-jar-150ml.html

the only thing with this stuff is, you'll find it easier to "lather" with a brush and a small cup/bowl rather than your hands

if you're after a brush and dont need a badger haired brush, i got a cheap brush from boots, its called the men-u shaving brush and i think its made of boar hair which is stiffer than badger hair, but still works really well! i got it for 3 quid in the shaving section.

if you need tips to starting double edged safely razor shaving check out some youtube vids to show you the whole process. its as fast or as slow as you want to make it.

i can DE shave in about ten mins using some cream latered in my hands. but i can also take about half hour if i use a brush and a bowl.

Been using my Merkur Slant for well over 5 months now. Damn fine bit of kit, but still a nightmare to do the middle bit right under the nostrils. I'm rather skilled with the slant now but I really want something more aggressive as I still do 3 passes on my beard. With my 34C it was about 5 passes before I had smooth skin.

I'm still going through the sampler pack that I bought off Connaught ages ago! I've used up my Feathers, binned the Merkur blades as they're junk, and have Derby Extras and my favourite Iridiums still remaining.

That's what i love about all of this. Yes its arguable that its a 'better' shave than a typical branded razor, but there's no arguing that it isn't cheaper in the long run.

£12 for soap which i got 6 months ago, still about 1/2 of it left. Much cheaper than the rubbish in the can (and nicer!). So that's around £6/year for soap.

£10 for 50 feather blades, i've used approximately 20 in 6 months, so that's less than £10/year for blades.

So that works out at less than £15/year. Much, much less than it used to cost me when i used 'normal' razors (A fiver for a five pack of blades that go blunt within two weeks, £3 for a can of rubbish foam that would last less than a month). Yeah the initial investment is larger, but i'd give it a year or two before i'm saving money. Every little helps!

There's no question that DE shaving is cheaper. It can take longer, sure, but it's without doubt cheaper and provides a better shave.

Gillette's marketing budget must be astronomical ;)

It's been a long time since I popped into my local boots store for manly products. I wonder how expensive the blades are for their latest ripoff razor. I recall being knocked sideways by the cost of blades for my gillette fusion, which was a gift. Hell it was the reason why I turned to DE shaving.

So guys, I'm about to order the 34c but still not sure on what blades I should use? I don't have a lot of facial hair. I get stubble on the bottom of my chin and obviously around the tash area. It's very minimal and I shave every 3/4 days.

So yea...the 34cc is a done deal but the blades?

Also still not sure on what gel/cream to use? Thinking the KOS gel?

Well, it is really up to you, but I have found that jumping in with DE shaving with a proper shaving cream and brush was very worthwhile instead of shop gels. It just feels better. I use Taylor of Old Bond St. Sandalwood cream and an Edwin Jagger Brush brush. Smells amazing too.

Can I recommend that if you can afford it, you order a starter set that will come in under £50. For example: http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...aving/_STA-CRE-NOR/268168/Starter-Kit---Cream

Balde-wise,. just use what it comes with to start off. Afterward you can buy a sample pack (I ordered one last week - 50 blades for under £10) and find out which you prefer.

Just amended my post. That's the one I got a few months back; no regret at all! There was a 10% discount code which may still work that I used earlier in this thread.

Some brushes can seem expensive but if you look after them they will last years so over there lifetime they actually work out really cheap.

Scrap that last post.

I've gone for...

Merkur 34cc

Taylor of Old Bond Street Shaving Cream

100 Derby Extra Blades

Now I need a cheap brush, no way am I spending more than £10 on a brush!
