Why does everyone mount their TV on the wall?

I'm just about to move house, and am speccing up a new Hifi/HT/TV setup. One thing I've noticed a lot of people doing is mounting their TV on the wall, and then putting all the hifi stuff on a stand below it. You then end up with a TV that's about 6' off the ground, when your head is only 4' off the ground, because you're sitting on the sofa.

Why do this?

Am I the only person who thinks that having a horizontal line of sight to your TV is a good thing? Am I woefully misguided about wanting to put my TV on a stand on top of a decent hifi shelf/stand thing?

It's ideally mounted at eyesight when sitting down - a lot of people just tend to go higher with it, probably because it looks more normal when you're standing measuring it up.

As for why they mount, mounting when it's done right can look very clean and tidy compared to just sitting on a cabinet.

When I am watching a film or relaxing I tend to lay back in my sofa so my back is not horizontal with the wall, plus having the tv slightly higher means I can mount my centre speaking at the correct level.

Why?

Because done right, and installed at the correct height, it looks great!

As said, mount it at eye level for whereever you plan to be sitting. But yeah, a lot of people mount them too high.

case in point

thats level with the light switch so I'd say that would be much higher than on a stand and too high.
Ah, but look at the striker plate on the door frame - the light switch is level with that - so a low light switch rather than a high TV. If you want further verification of the relative height then look at the mains socket height on the left of the picture.

Wall mounting is fine at the right height. You're right about people putting them too high, people seem to assume above the fireplace is the right place but it's going to be at least 2ft too high.

If you're going to wall mount, sit on your sofa and see what height suits you so you can watch it comfortably.

Bubba, as long as your centre speaker is directly above/below the screen you'll be fine.

my tv is on the wall. it's about 6" above eye level but angled down. there is no issue there.

You then end up with a TV that's about 6' off the ground, when your head is only 4' off the ground, because you're sitting on the sofa.

no, people end up doing that because they dont think about where the tv should be. its perfectly possible to put one on the wall and get it right, space permitting.

I've had my new plasma in use with the table top stand for a couple of weeks now and I feel it should be higher soooo last night while in work I knocked up a new frame so I can mount it to the same AV stand (Ikea special) but have it suspended as if wall mounted. This will also free up the space where the table stand was thus allowing a new av receiver ;) which wouldnt have fitted between the shelf below.
