Back from Afan - It was a touch brisk at -18c

Saturday - The Wall, rubbish trail, nothing technical and boring.
Today - Whites Level x 2. An awesome ride, made super tricky with big sections frozen up with ice.

Also broke my derailleur hanger and had to do the last sections single speed - grrr

A couple of pics
Yes seat is high, it gets lowered for the fun parts.

Aw damn, you should have said your were going. I would have gone up there in a flash. Looks like an awesome day though!

Really? I love the last downhill singletrack section (starts by the country house/b+b with the dirt jumps after a bit of singletrack) a very good fast smooth ride at the top of it, and then turns to a bit more technical after a sharp 180degree right hand turn.
Come back over and ride it at night - a much better ride ;)

Possibly Afan's best ride! How long did it take you for a round trip of it?

I also rate the Penhydd trail but that's closed till next April due to foresty work. :( Has some nice sections and a killer uphill.

Yeah the last section of The Wall was pretty good. We were bombing it down and nearly took out someone walking up it and two others riders who were stopped on the trail - kinda scary.

First lap of Whites took 1hr 30mins but Energy onwards was ridiculously icy (practically unrideable) and I was stuck in single speed, having to stop a lot to unlock the chain and wheel.
Will defo go back next year when it's warmer.

Heh - for some reason a lot of walkers ignore the signs in Afan. :(
1hr30? Jesus... I would not like to be your riding buddy, you'd be waiting at the car :D Bl**dy good effort ;)

My ride today was a technical 50 mile XC ride, 7 hours on the bike, mucho fun.

I run tubeless on my XC bikes using Stans Arch rims, juice and normal tyres. I've used a bunch of different tyres without issue. It's probably not a huge weight saving, but the increase in traction is very nice and I don't remember the last time I had a flat. DH bike has UST DHF and DHR's on deemax's with some juice added just to make sure.

edit: I always have a mech hanger, couple of power links, a tube and a puncture kit when XC. On the road I have two tubes, park patch kit and powerlock. My rides take me a long way from home frequently though.

edit: Which is the big loop at Afan, W2? That's the one I rode when I visited.

Oops!
Just saw this on their weibsite...which I guess is the reason for lack of stock @ CRC

Hey supercow thanks for the help anyway!

I went down to my local lbs and asked if they had any.. they mentioned they might have to order it in from their suppliers and i had to break it to them that they no longer distributed for formula anymore! I was about to leave defeated when i suggested we look at some avid juicy 3s as they're a very similar brake (bleed kits are the same, at least) and hey presto! the screw is the same on both brakes! They managed to salvage a screw for me from a busted set of juicys and i flung them a couple of quid for it! £10 saved :). This one looks like its made out of steel too. Bonus.

Now maybe its time for some snow tyres?

Edit: This thread is now 500 pages long and just shy of 15k posts!

50 miles - nice :)
How much fluid do you take with you?

I've thought about running tubelss a few times but it just seems too much hassle for little benefit.

W2 is The Wall and Whites combined, linked by a fireroad :)

90 mins ride to the trails, 4 hours in the woods, but only 3 hours moving as there was a lot of stop and play on rocks and logs, then 90mins back a slightly different route.

I'd normally aim for a bottles worth of liquid each hour during the summer, but it was cool out and I'm starting to train for something so I did 3 1/2 bottles worth.
