hey guys,

ive been looking at benchmarks results, reviews etc but still cant decide which card to go for :(

ive always used nvidia so i cant compare ati to nvidia

i will be overclocking the card as well (will the gtx benefit in this compared to the other 2 cards???)

i have £200-220 MAX !!

ill be playing crysis/metro 2033/far cry 2/css/company of heroes/starcraft2/alien vs predator etc... so there is some very graphic demanding games there and my gaming resolution is 1680x1050 (like to play the games at ultra with no sluggish scenes

looking forward to the recommendations

cheers guys

Bin the thoughts of getting a 5830, they're rubbish. I'd suggest a 6870, it has a very slight performance lead on the 470 runs cooler, uses a lot less power and is quieter, plus the 470 is EOL (end of line any more) whereas the 6870 is a very recent product so naturally will get a little more support.

will the 6870 be albe to walk all over bfbc2 and AVP at 1680x1050 with max settings (or when overclocked) ???

If your not overclocking, care about heat output and power use then go with the 6870, if you plan to overclock and not bothered by a bit of heat and higher power consumption then the 470 is the better choice. Both will handle 1680x very comfortably. Forget the 5830 completely tho.

Just to add weight here.. dump the idea of the 5830, it can't even compete with the other two. 6870 for efficiency etc, whilst 470 to possibly maximise your money, at the expense of heat and noise (unless you get a cooler version).

From the way I read it.. the 470 is close to the 480 when heavily overclocked so I doubt the 6870 could touch it unless it's VERY heavily overclocked.

Bear in mind that prices are fluctuating like crazy at the moment from Nvidia, and ati is about to release it's 69xx series cards very very soon (early december), and the 570 which is expected to be released a few days before hand may well push prices down further.

If buying today (before 9am tomorrow) I'd definately recommend that MSI GTX 470. Looks like a cracking card.

GTX 570s may be out in the next couple of weeks or so, so may see the GTX 470s coming down a bit more in price.

Prices of 6870s seem to be creeping up. Found a Gigabyte reference design for £179.99, one of the cheapest I can find.

thanks for that I was wondering as well, but i'm gonna wait for the 570 to come out. any idea how much it will be? the new amd will be released soon aswell. so we should see a price drop!

At the moment, if £115 5850's are still available, even without great overclocking(I assume its a non reference, non voltage control gigabyte model) its a freaking and absolute steal, unmatched by anything even close in value. If not, wait for the new cards in all of a week and see some ridiculous 470/480gtx pricing. 470gtx will be the sweet spot but if that 570gtx hits around £270, to shift the 480gtx stock before they get stuck with them I can see some VERY silly prices happening on them.

At this point I wouldn't consider a 6850/6870, long term they are good cards at a good price, but standard pricing will NEVER compete with EOL pricing, great for us really, but timing becomes everything ;)

how do you know have you owned one ? , the 6870 is just a revised/reworked 5830 is it not ? (same amount of shaders)

Also the 5830 was crippled to begin with, having only half the number of raster operators as the rest of the 5800 family significantly reducing its ability to handle higher resolutions and levels of antialiasing.
