Fixed penalty and 3 points for snow on roof?

REVERSAL!

No. T'was a lie.

Presumably only if lights are required, ie. it's dark? Or could a notice be issued for having iced over lights in broad daylight?

I can't see an FPN being issued in daylight conditions if snow covered your lights although I would still clear them before travelling in case snow started falling etc and lighting was required.

Perhaps you guys are used to heavier snow than I've ever seen around here though...

Does this help clear things up?

That was my trip from Banchory to the Cairngorms yesterday.

Am I the only one that gets in the car and just drives having cleared the windscreen? That's all you need. Deal with the rest when required, or get up to a ton and it flies off. As the car heats up the rest melts anyway.

I actually don't even bother clearing the windscreen, everyone else can see me so they'll get out the way.
If it's suitable conditions I pile more snow onto my car, making sure to cover lights and number plate, try to pack it into the arches too. Usually have time to make a 5ft snowman and prop igloo on the roof also.

Just takes care of itself when driving.

Same idiots who clear a porthole on their windscreen, get in the car and drive off.

These people shouldn't be behind a wheel in control of a motor vehicle. They should be on a bus if they want to go from A to B. ;)

Quoted for truth, see this every time I venture out now and normally its the same idiots in the outer lanes where there's snow/ice over taking everyone as if its normal weather conditions!

I have had a couple of scary moments where people haven't cleared their roof (or at least the majority of) and then they're in front of me, all of a sudden it dumps the entire lot on to my windscreen and I am completely blind.

I saw a Land Rover this morning, a good amount of snow all over apart from the windscreen. Numberplates, side windows and lights all frosted up.

No idea what the offence may be or if anyone's actually getting done, but I just saw a couple of Police cars parked up and pulling cars into a lay-by. Officers stood there looking bloody cold, pointing at the cars and the drivers wiping snow off. Didn't see anyone touching the roofs though, just windows. North Yorkshire btw.

Your method of clearing the snow (whilst it can work) is ridiculous, the fact you care more for the paint on that shed you call a car, than the hazard you are creating on the road, is laughable.

So many morons on the road just now, driving about with 4/5 inches of snow/compacted ice on the roofs of their cars. The way I look at it, these are probably the kind of idiots who cause accidents in winter due to utter incompetence.
If you can't even be bothered to clear your roof of snow, can you please either a) get a bus/walk or b) slit your throat.

Sick of having to keep a comedy distance between cars to stay out of the snow drift they are creating. Even sicker of having to avoid sheets of ice that slide off cars once they are up to NSL speeds...

People should get penalty points and fines for this, it might stop them being lazy fools without a care for any other road user.

[/lengthy rant]

I would agree with this normally, but today it deserves to be highlighted again. Just for being absolute undeniable truth.

+1

OMG just saw this lol. You need to take a chill pill mate. Yes I cause accidents every year by not clearing the snow on my roof. Yes that's right.

I find all the fuss about the snow quite a laugh this year, we've had a bit of snow this year and immediately I see all kind of signs and lamp posts being run down, even though I spend 5 hours per day in a van in the snow this winter I don't go about panicking like some people do... I cetainly refuse to clear my roof of snow if it has some on it, windows and lights yeah, roof, NO, a couple times of accelerating and braking and it's gone.

I assume you do this before travelling at 40mph or whatever, so essentially you are clearing the snow off your roof. No different to just pushing it off with your hand and it's not like letting momentum push the snow off your car is any less likely to scratch your car.

You seem to take great offense to that. ;) Chill out.

For the reasons that sp00n mentions a couple of posts back, you are the kind of person who could cause accidents.

It's only a little bit of snow but left for a while, a little bit can turn into a lot, then it can melt a bit and re-freeze, then it's ice... And it'll easily cause damage if it falls off and hits the car behind.
I may sound like a complete **** harking on about snow on car roofs, but so many people just don't see it as a problem. It takes all of 30 seconds to clear the worst of it off. If someone can't even manage that, maybe they shouldn't be on the road...
